Excellent Small Server

Been wanting one for years
There are good points and bad points to this device. As a tinkerer, I side graded a 4 disc NAS box - co-ersted into running Windows 2016 Server - onto this hardware. The emc NAS box was a 4 core Atom based box with only 4GB of memory, this is a 2 core AMD-based box with 8 GB of RAM and a spare slot. It was abit of a gamble but cost wise, they were about on par. This platform runs windows far more smoothly and has way better graphics out.The down side - and its a pain - is the CPU is welded onto the board so you are stuck with the 2 cores.Such a bad move... bad move. The BIOS needed updating as on delivery it was a couple of years out of date but generally, the transfer was easy enough.I'm happy with it. It's quiet and does the job but I would not buy another one. Apparently the gen9 was more flexible CPU-wise. There are better options for a small device available and there are better options for a home server out there but this is an adequate small home server. The 4 discs is the best part. There are two low profile PCIe slots but the room inside the box is small so if you are adding a card, it better be really really small.

General Review
It’s actually fine for light use, using as a document storage and media server.I use it mainly for documents, backup and running virtual machines for pen testing. If you not using it as your main pc, it’s totally fine.It doesn’t come with a hard drive so you need to get one.It doesn’t come with an optical drive or the SATA data and SATA power to easily plug an optical in.If you don’t want an optical you can mount a SSD in place but there’s a bracket for that. You need SSD caddy if you want to mount a SSD in 1 of the 4 main bays.

Avoid like the plague
So I purchased this - all working fine....now 8 months later.....machine keeps shutting down - know BIOS issue....so you think simple...update BIOS.Alas....no way hose....HP only give you 1 month support....so no access to the new BIOS......Priceless....so 8months in.....now a door stop !!!!

Nice.. but not worth the current asking price!
As a proud owner of 2 of these, my advise is skip it. I was lucky to bag of them upon release, they have since almost doubled in price... Then add on another £300+ for the 32 RAM, you can get more processing for you buck if you look elsewhere!

Terrible step backwards for HP
Brought this project to build a home lab. Had previously used the Gen8 and was shocked at how bad this newer model model is.- Chassis design worse. More flimsy, poor access- Internal drive is a shoddy quality USB flash drive- BIOS has known issue with little support from HP (server constantly shutsdown)- No ILO feature (deal breaker for any serious server setup)Utterly useless

Microserver domestico
