Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book (2023 Release)

Très complet et utile.

I'm a photographer, and my Photoshop (PS) use had devolved mostly to Adobe Camera Raw. I was quite rusty on the rest of the graphic arts functions. (If you want only photography lessons, you are better off with Scott Kelby's books. The universe of PS books and their writers has shrunk markedly.) I also used the CIAB books 15-20 years ago, and I wanted to refresh my skills/knowledge. Here are my new observations:1) PS itself is more mature. Not only the newer content-aware and AI stuff, but the interface is smoother. There is more help for those little things you soon forget. And as improved tools have come along, there is sometimes a checkbox to go back to the legacy version. That is, the accretions in PS that never go away are still there, out of sight, but still available if you want them. As new PS updates keep coming out, some things will be different. Such as "Settings" now instead of "Preferences" on the Mac. Slight interface changes are easy to work around, but you'll have to look up any new tools online. Also, the Creative Cloud app is no longer buggy and works very smoothly on Mac OS.2) Old CIAB books had some tutorial steps that didn't work or were missing, and sometimes you couldn't complete a tutorial even starting over. I haven't come across any of those yet. I believe Conrad Chavez is a veteran Adobe writer, but editing is half the battle. So far so good. I tend not to use the ebook versions of textbooks (my daughter loves them), but the free ebook for this volume is actually useful. Some detail of illustrations in the print book are too small or low-res to read -- everything's crystal clear in the ebook. Also, the videos in the ebook, which are almost literal repeats, are decent quality. I use them for review, but they would be just as good as a primary resource. The "one hour" estimate to complete the lessons is too optimistic if you really want to learn and remember, especially as it's useful to just play around with the tools for reinforcement. Lastly, tutorial files are easy to download.OK, this review will be obsolete as soon as the next CIAB annual update appears. I looked at last year's edition, though, and there was little change. The new AI stuff in PS that accesses Firefly online will likely appear in the 2024 version, however. It's a big deal.
