Desperately in need of a best seller to revive his struggling career, true crime writer Ellison (Ethan Hawke), moves his family to the scene of his most recent story; the unsolved, gruesome murder of a loving, happy suburban family. Shunned by the local community and strained by his obligations to his family, the discovery of a batch of home movies in the attic offers Ellison shocking proof to the crime he is investigating and the terrifying realisation that his investigation may be putting his family in mortal danger. Review: A Well-Made Scary Film - So many films nowadays deliver movies with unoriginal content, that just have a lot of deaths, screams and bumps. This one has a great plot that draws the viewer in, with facts being given every so often. Ethan Hawke plays a burnt-out true crime writer. He moves his family into a home where mass killings took place earlier. However, he fails to tell his wife and children this vital fact. When he looks in the attic he finds a projector, plus home movies that had been left there before. What he sees unnerves him. Sinister is quite a slow burner of a film. It does take time for certain things to happen, but there are a few grisly incidents early on, noises and shocks. The effective camerawork heightens the tension throughout. The movie is very atmospheric. A great one to watch in the middle of the night on your own with the lights off. I can see this possibly having a sequel or even a prequel, in the way Paranormal Activity did. I hope they don't do this, as the movie is fine on it's own. The viewer is better left to figure out what will happen next. Very clever
Leaving aside what are obvious no-no's - as a psychotherapist, the gaffes in the script are painful but leeway for artistic licence must be given since - this is a very good story. Jude Law is excellent. Pretty boy-turned mans, his acting conveys the subtly and intelligence of his part which could not have been conveyed without it being inherent to the actor. The actress Rooney Mara is chilling, Catherine Zeta-Jones is good (looks a bit like a gargoyle in what appears as an attempt to lessen her good looks for the sake of gravitas - didn't work and was a little distracting) and Channing Tatum was also very good. I have to say there was one section in the film where I had become sufficiently bored to be on the brink of turning it off, but I persevered and for the sake of the at the end - I was glad. It was a great ending, both from the plot's twists and from the sense of satisfaction. would watch it again.

Well executed horror
While this film uses many of the usual horror staples, it executes them with such skill that everything is bestowed a new terror. The main character is, as in all such films, prone to unwise action, but his motives are well presented, and in fact all the characters, for their limited interactions, feel refreshingly intelligent. This was my first horror movie in full HD, and I was blown away by the video quality. Even with its many dark scenes, the picture is beautiful and crisp (with the exception of a few projector sequences which are left intentionally grainy). Surround sound definitely enhances the scare factor, and the film's eerie soundtrack can be just as unsettling as the disturbing footage Ellison finds in his attic. If you're going to watch one "haunted house" movie, let it be this one.

The brothers Grimm could do better.
Just acquired this to refresh my memory of it ready to go see Sinister 2. I could vaguely remember what it was about but thought best refresh so I don't miss out on any references to this one in the sequel. Anyway this is classed as a modern classic horror, but I don't see why. Ho it's competently made and as all the ingredient of a good (not great but good) horror movie but the director seems to sleep walk through it. Never really getting the best out of it, the actors or the camera work. It's about on par with a well made soap. Soaps have to shoot multiple episodes a week not just 90 minutes over six weeks. I found the story interesting and was intrigued enough to want to see the out come, but the images were lacklustre, lacking atmosphere or any sense of dread or the slightest threat. You knew what was going to happen the only mystery was how and by who, though for by who, we only have an option of two and the odds point to one more than the other. When he, our protagonist, is reviewing the home movies of previous victims I guess we are supposed to be horrified by them, and they are horrific, but are shown in such a matter a fact way, with no sound other than that of the projectors clatter, that they become clinically sterile. Like watching some old medical operation leaving us the viewer interested but disconnected and uninvolved. The rest is just padding to fill out the time and prolong the inevitable ending. It tries to inject some sense of maniacal presence lurking in the shadows but fails to invoke the right atmosphere to make it convincing. Would have made one of those late night spooky dramas on TV back in the sixties and seventies. No more than a modern fairy story. Good to watch just for the story line but not if you really want something to frighten you.

A modern new horror character
Finally a great new horror movie and the creation of a true horror character! It's been a long time since there was any original horror movie but this is up there, is it a little bit slow at times? Yes to somer. But I felt the tone of the movie is fantastic, a family with issues, a character with his problems and all this works to make you think. The acting throughout is good, Ethan hawke does well at showing the character progress deeper and darker as the movie goes. It provided us with a few jumps and unexpected moments which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Once you see him nothing can save you!
A true-crime writer(Ethan Hawke) finds a cache of 8mm home movies films that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose career dates back to the 1960s. I enjoyed this horror film as i'm a fan of them and of Ethan Hawke, great special effects. good acting all round at a budget of 3 million dollars, just goes to show that you don't need a lot of money to make a good horror film. Recommend this to all horror fans and really good value for money enjoy.

Great Scary Movie! Back To The Roots Of True Horror!
Most scary/horror movies are just plain pitiful these days. There are also too many idiot films like the Paranormal Activity films. But, this movie hit the spot. It is just freaky period! This felt like it went back to the roots of what horror should be. If you truly want to be scared and freaked out, watch this movie!
