TROPICA® - Sweetleaf (Sugar Leaf) (Stevia rebaudiana) - 100 SeedsWorth knowing: The sweetleaf is a small growing (about 50 cm tall) shrub thriving best in a pot. It has soft leaves, flexible, hairy shoots and produces white flowers on the tip of the shoots during autumn. By now, the plant is cultivated all over the world, it has, however, not been officially approved as food-stuff everywhere. The Stevia produces a natural sweetener that surpasses the sweetness of regular sugar by far, but is not that harmful. By the way: Stevia seeds usually do have a germination rate that is quite low, just 15 to 30%. We sell black Stevia seeds that have a considerably higher germinability of 40 to 45%. Origin: Indigenous to South America, for the most part to Brasil.Propagation: Press the light seeds into moist cultivation soil and cover them very thinly. Move the cultivation container in a warm place (e.g. on a radiator) and keep it evenly moist, however, not wet. Germination should follow after 1 to 4 weeks. Place / Light: Use the leaves either in fresh or dried condition for tea, fruit salad etc.. Mainly for everything that can be sweetened. Because of their itense sweetness they should however be used sparingly. Care: For its thick roots the plant needs a slightly larger pot. It should be watered evenly, but does not tolerate water logging. If single shoots are growing too slow, they can be shortened according to one's own desire. The sweetleaf will then grow more bushy and densely.Winter period: The plant stays green throughout the winter, does, however, need sufficient light to do this. If it is too dark, too cold or too dry, the plant retreats and will not grow new shoots until spring. Water little during winter. Bonsai Suitability: No
