A Walk In The Woods [DVD] [2015]

Brilliant, Nick Nolte was hilarious

Another of Bob Redford's understated anti-hero storylines. The outdoors is the star of the show, the story rolls along at a gentle pace and the script works well. The two actors offer up a very good, if a bit unlikely, chemistry between and this adds to the mix. Well worth a watch.

The movie: Iowa born Bill Bryson (Robert Redford), author of travel, science, and various other Books, has returned to America after living in England for some years. He's now living in New Hampshire and while walking around his neighbourhood discovers a section of the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail which spans the distance between Georgia and Maine, U.S.A. Having just attended a funeral, and perhaps feeling decidedly mortal, he decides he isn't quite done yet. He decides to walk the Trail. His wife, Catherine (Emma Thompson), worries he will die. Not easily put off, so Catherine insists he cannot go alone. Bill Bryson ends up on the Appalachian trail with the only person who will go with him: Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte), a man markedly out of shape, a womanising ex-alcoholic who's got a little secret about why he wants to go.Walk in the Woods (2015) is an uplifting, often hilarious adventure movie which is a fresh of breath air to watch. Needless to say, Bryson and Katz (who is said to be Matt Angerer in real life) are not prime examples of how to navigate the Appalachian Trail but what makes this film somewhat special to me is the rapport between the two aging (aged) buddies who are in some kind of geriatric denial. In reality, though, Bryson was only in his 40s when he headed for the hills. Although Bryson and Katz niggle at each other from time to time, they also reminisce. While I enjoyed Redford's performance (he'll be 80 this year), it was Nick Nolte's performance that won my applause. He gets better and better. There are, of course, breathtaking locations to be seen in this adventure movie, and the cinematography is wonderful, not least when Bryson and Katz stand upon a rock ledge overlooking an expansive wilderness. However, don't be fooled into thinking that this is a family movie as it involves strong language and sexual references.With regard to the DVD itself. The quality of the picture is so fine, so clear, and high def, and the sound so good, that I am glad I didn't fork out for a BluRay.

I have now watched this film several times and it still makes me laugh out loud each time. The only down side is the bad language and sexual content which is unnecessary and therefore makes it unsuitable for children who would have enjoyed the adventure.

Watched this right after finishing the book. While I enjoyed spotting all the references to the original material, the film itself doesn't hold up as well on its own. If you haven't read Bryson's book, you likely won't get as much out of it.

Great feel good film

Humour is a very subjective thing. The same joke doesn't appeal to everybody. I have seen very mixed reviews for this film, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not a laugh aloud hilariously type of film, but we found it very funny and had seen it in the cinema. That's why we bought it because we thought it was well worth seeing again.

Gentle, funny, a lovely film, the actors are convincing and the scenery is beautiful. Well worth buyin I would watch it again.

I watched this movie when it first came out and loved the story along with the characters. My son recently bought me the book, and as I keep reading, I can relate more and more to Katz (Nick Nolte), as I'm getting older and a little more overweight but an adventure is something we all can identify with and wish we can partake in. Well, Katz and Bryson do just that. It's an exciting book to read and so glad that I can watch the movie again. It's an amazing movie with a lot of comedy and excitement which everyone will enjoy. I highly recommend this movie to those with a sense of adventure and comedy. Hope there's a sequel.

This is a great movie. Well acted, beautiful scenery, very funny, and it has Robert Redford and Emma Thompson who improve any film they are in, and Nick Nolte was very good. I recommend it strongly to anyone who does not hate the out-of-doors

Autant le livre de Bryson était plein d'humour autant cette adaptation est nulle. Pour commencer on a mis 2 vieillards de 80 ans pour representer Bryson et son ami, alors que les heros ont 50 ans! Ils ne sont pas crédibles marchant comme 2 petits vieux.Quelqu'uns des episodes les plus drôles ne le sont plus du tout tant ils sont traités avec lourdeur.Même les vues de l'AT ne sont pas terribles.Ceux qui se plaignent que le dvd ne soit pas traduit en francais n'ont rien à regretter
