Carol Davis takes us on a journey here, both literal (the landscapes of Siberia, Los Angeles, and Nebraska) and figurative (inner and spiritual). There is deep emotional intelligence here, and her love of the snow and cold clearly shines through. It's complicated, as her ancestors were Russian Jews who had to flee because of pogroms. But then, isn't everything in all of our lives complicated, in one way or another? Davis teaches us to look for beauty, whether it's ribbons hanging from trees, "a blue so bright it hurts the eyes,"or the dangling strap on Madame X's dress in Sargent's painting.
