tomtoc 40L Travel Backpack: A Traveler’s Dream for Week-Long Adventures
As a frequent traveler who loves the freedom of carry-on-only trips, I’ve been on a quest to find the perfect backpack that balances space, organization, and durability without breaking the bank. After much research and deliberation, I was torn between the tomtoc Travel Backpack 40L and a Nomatic backpack. I ultimately chose the Tomtoc, and after using it for multiple week-long vacations, I can confidently say I have zero regrets. This bag is an absolute game-changer for run-and-gun travelers like me. The tomtoc 40L is a carry-on traveler’s dream, offering an impressive amount of space while staying within most airline size restrictions. I’ve packed this backpack for several 5- to 7-day trips, and it’s never let me down. The 40L capacity is perfect for a week’s worth of essentials, including clothes, shoes, toiletries, and tech gear. On my last trip, I easily fit five days’ worth of outfits (including a pair of sneakers), a toiletry kit, my 16-inch MacBook Pro, iPad, chargers, and a slew of accessories. The clamshell-style main compartment opens like a suitcase, making packing and unpacking a breeze, and the ability to access the main compartment through the laptop section is a genius touch for grabbing items quickly during TSA security checks. What sets this backpack apart is its incredible organization. The tomtoc is loaded with sleeves and pockets that keep everything neatly sorted. The dedicated tech compartment is a standout, featuring a padded laptop sleeve that securely holds my 15-inch MacBook Air and a separate tablet sleeve for my iPad. There’s also a pocket for chargers, cables, and smaller tech accessories. The top front pocket is perfect for quick-access items like my passport, boarding pass, and sunglasses, while the side pockets are ideal for a water bottle or other items. For toiletries like deodorant, hair products, and a travel-sized toothbrush, I use the front zip pocket or a small toiletry bag in the main compartment, and everything stays organized and accessible. (There are so many zippers but it’s not excessive). The build quality is another reason I’m so impressed with this bag. Made from water-resistant recycled fabric and equipped with sturdy YKK zippers, it feels durable and premium despite its budget-friendly price (well under $100, compared to the $250-$350 Nomatic bags I considered). I’ve taken it on multiple flights, including a Ryanair trip where size compliance is strict, and it fit perfectly in the overhead bin or under the seat when compressed. The material shows no signs of wear after several trips, and the water resistance has saved my gear during unexpected light rain. The eco-friendly aspect of using recycled PET fabric is a nice bonus, making me feel good about my purchase. Comfort is critical for a travel backpack, and the tomtoc delivers here too. The padded shoulder straps and breathable back panel make it comfortable to carry, even when fully loaded (I’ve had it up to about 15-20 lbs). The contoured straps and sternum strap distribute weight evenly, and the luggage pass-through strap is a lifesaver for sliding the bag onto my rolling suitcase during long airport walks. My only minor gripe is the lack of a hip belt, which would help with heavier loads on extended carries, but for most trips, I haven’t found this to be a dealbreaker. Compared to the Nomatic 40L, which I considered for its sleek design and organizational features, the tomtoc offers nearly identical functionality at a fraction of the cost. The Nomatic’s internal water bottle pocket and detachable waist strap were tempting, but the tomtoc’s spacious compartments, TSA-friendly laptop sleeve, and overall value won me over. The tomtoc’s minimalist yet stylish design also gets compliments—friends have mistaken it for a much pricier brand like Pakt. In short, the tomtoc Travel Backpack 40L is a run-and-gun traveler’s dream. It’s versatile enough for business trips, weekend getaways, or week-long adventures, with ample space and smart organization for clothes, tech, and toiletries. The durable construction, comfortable design, and TSA-friendly features make it a reliable companion, and the price-to-value ratio is unbeatable. I highly recommend this backpack to anyone looking for a carry-on that can handle it all without the premium price tag. tomtoc nailed it with this one, and it’s become my go-to travel companion for every journey.

Fantastic Business Trip Bag!
Great backpack, plenty of room without being overpowering. I put 4 pair of pants, 5 sweaters, and a toiletry bag in there and it fit comfortably (without packing cubes). I probably could’ve stuffed a couple more things in there to max it out. I was able to sling it over my shoulder and it was comfortable enough to move around with. For me this could easily accommodate a 4 day trip along with electronics in the padded pockets. Documents can also be put in the padded pockets. The top pocket fit my wallet, passport, keys and AirPods comfortably. This bag is my new favorite travel companion! Worth every penny for what you get in return. Material is durable and sturdy, padding is comfortable and breathable. This bag can probably be used as an everyday backpack for work since the compression straps/clips make it smaller without clothing inside. This is ideal for a one or two day business trip!

Great backpack
I recently traveled from the Big Island of Hawaii to Sedona, and since I didn’t want to check in any luggage, I decided to travel with just my carry-on suitcase and this backpack that I ordered. In conclusion, I really like this backpack. When packing, it opens wide like a duffel bag, which made it easy to organize my things. There’s another compartment where I could safely store my laptop. I was able to fit quite a lot of clothes inside. It got heavy when fully packed, but once I fastened the chest strap, it felt much more comfortable to carry. The size was perfect for a carry-on and fit easily under the seat in front of me, so I didn’t even need to use the overhead bin. After getting off the plane, I could slide the backpack over the handle of my carry-on suitcase using the pass-through strap, which was really convenient. It also has a side handle, so I could carry it like a duffel bag if I wanted. In Sedona, I used it for hiking—it was great for carrying my camera, jacket, snacks, and lunch. I thought it might be a little big at first, but the external buckles and straps allowed me to adjust the size and make it more compact. I’m really glad I bought this backpack. I chose the black one, and I love the design—it looks really stylish. Next year, I plan to travel to California, and I’ll definitely bring this backpack again along with my carry-on suitcase. I don’t want to pay extra to check in luggage anymore!

Great bag, needs a few things desperately
Really nice bag. Good space inside. Easy to distribute the weight. It feels sturdy and is showing no wear so far. Stands up nicely. Looks good. It’s professional enough for to double as your laptop bag. Overall I really like the bag and would recommend. Packing four days of clothes in a backpack I can fit as a carryon, and sometimes can shove under the seat in front of me, is so much easier to travel with than a wheeled bag. One note on packing, pack soft stuff on the outside, harder inside, makes the water bottle holders and cinch straps more functional. The first time I used I packed it like the pictures they show. While it’s nice and pretty, and makes living out of the bag easier, toiletries, chargers and the like at the top make it hard to put a water bottle in when cinched. The bad needs…. A waste belt. When full the bag and contents can weigh a fair bit, especially with a laptop and two large water bottles. A waist belt would be great to put the weight where it belongs — off your back. Inside organization on the laptop side. I unpack, cinch tight and use it as my laptop bag on arrival. There is I only one large pocket, minimally the bag needs a second smaller one. I have a few bags from TomToc and this is a common design flaw of theirs. Inside key chain clip. For travel and getting thru security. It’s good to know where your keys are when you arrive and not have to open the entire back panel because they slide to the bottom. While the bag has two nice sizes outer pockets, keys scratch so I don’t want to put my keys in them. I improvised with a red pull tab inside the bag and a carabiner. Outside loops (climbers style would be great). Again for clipping things, but to the outside of the bag. I don’t use them often, but they can be a life saver when needed (keep carabiners and short bungy cord and you can tie a bag of wet clothes, shoes, a rolled jacket, etc.).

Tomtoc is slowly becoming one of my favorite bag makers
I'll preface by saying I'm always looking for the perfect backpack. This has taken me to etsy for great leather briefcases for my edc during office days, Peak Design for build quality, Nomatic for thoughtful useful design. A couple months ago, I started biking to work and thought it'd be a good idea to get a smaller bag I can fit in my pannier that was not as heavy as my leather briefcases. I own a small Dell XPS13 and my edc consists of my laptop, an anker battery for my phone (should I need it), a couple of fountain pens, planner, box cutter, water bottle and perhaps a light jacket or sweater. I decided a Sling would be perfect. Quickly found out most 10L slings fit my small laptop. I've always disliked having such a compact laptop in a huge bag. I like my small laptop and I wanted a bag to match it perfectly. I tried 7 different sling bags. Returned all but the Tomtoc 10L one (the one with 2 straps in the bottom, as they have another one that kinda looks like a small backpack, which I didn't think was all that practical for me). I've been enjoying it for a few weeks now. Fantastic little sling, far more convenient for me than Nomatic or Peak Design's laptop sling. Which got me to try this backpack. I ordered the smaller one, since I prefer bags that fit exactly what I need without getting bulky. I don't think the perfect backpack exists, but this is extremely close. These guys designed a wonderfully functional backpack with a dedicated compartment for my computer, it also has a slot for me to store my wife's computer when we travel; both of our EDCs and have everything accesible in a spot where it makes sense. Build quality is very good, materials are quite good as well. It all feels well made and very well thought of. I would be happy if this is what I got if I had spent even more than the $75 I paid for it. I very nearly bought Peak Design's 15L Backpack Zip ($189) and while that bag is prettier (loved the "bone" colorway), for my use case, this tomtoc bag is far more versatile and comfortable. Good job tomtoc.

Excellent travel bag for under $100
At the time I was looking at this and the MATEIN backpack. The MATEIN seemed decent, as it was more than half the price. But I am so glad I went with this TomToc Travel backpack. I travel with my LG gram 17 inch laptop and it protected that beautifully. It had more than enough space for a few days’ worth of clothing. I really liked the placement of the zippers and the quality of the zippers as well as the quality of the bag itself. It has a nice nice thick material good padding and very clever placement of pockets and handles. I really had a hard time spending this much money on a travel backpack but I am so glad to not spend more on one. This backpack is excellent value for the money and very sturdy. I am sure you get what you pay for with the $300 and $400 backpacks but for somebody on a budget (but not a MATEIN super low budget, lol) this was perfect for my needs. I kept my passport and wallet in the top pocket just below the top handle. So no matter how much I stuffed my backpack my passport was always with an easy reach and never at risk of being bent or damaged even when the backpack was stuffed to the limit.

Well made and thought out bag!
This travel pack is very well made and suits my needs to a T. The compartments are well thought out and zipper access is on point. I can comfortably travel for 3-5 days with this pack and have no issues with size or space when flying. I’m very particular about travel bags and this one gets 5 stars from me !

Wanted a pakt, zero disappointment that I got this instead
I really really wanted a pakt. Saw a bunch of YouTube videos for that + similar options. All were between $250-$350. tomtoc was well less than $100. Let me run down why I am so over the moon about this bag (plus some areas of improvement for tomtoc) - Build quality. Top notch. They say it's made out of recycled bottles. Is it? Guess so, but the material does not feel cheap or flimsy. Already been on 2 flights and 1 weekend getaway. Still looks new. - Size. It's 40L, perfect for a long weekend for 2 or a week for 1. I just got back from 5 days away and had clothes + sandals + toiletries + laptop + iPad + cables. Whew! - Comfort. Pretty comfy, and the pads on the back keep my back from sweating. Love that. Design. Got a lot of side looks and friends/family commenting on how swank it looks. One person even thought it was a Pakt. Again, for well less than $100, can't complain. - Convenience. LOVE all the side pockets! Going through TSA and having to shove your wallet, keys, and phone in quickly before the scanner is SUPER convenient. Also, being able to quickly get into the overhead on the plane and pull out cables and such without having to open or move around the bag is great. A couple of points of improvement: - The area where you put your clothes can only be accessed after opening the "tech" part of the bag. I kinda get why, because it would conflict with the side pouches for the water bottle. Me personally I'd give up the water bottle for the convenience of accessing either compartment independently - The utility and convenience of the bag goes through the roof once you pair it with travel cubes. Why not include a small set to get people started? I bought a set of 4 for $25 and they rock.

Sturdy and effective, with LOTS of space!!!
Have it for 2 years now, and strong as the first day. Only the top handle is now showing a bit of "use" and starting to open a bit, hope it still holds. The usage I give: LOTS! My main bag for my gym and work, plus lots of flying as well.

Fantastic
I was afraid this item was not legit. Oh, I was wrong. It is very well built. I already used it, and it passed the test. I packed it full on, and it was a pleasure to use. Recommended!

I ended up buying three of these bags I loved it so much
Oh dear ... I ended up buying three of these bags I loved it so much! I purchased one of these to take as carry-on luggage on a recent trip, and since then I have purchased two further identical bags. The first thing to note is the impressive packaging, arriving in a sealed bag inside a custom card box. Straightaway this stands out as a quality product. The bag itself is very well made with good quality fabric and strong zips, and adjustable straps to add additional security. It has handles on the side and top, and straps to carry as a back-back. It also has a useful strap across the back to secure it to the handles of a roller-suitcase: no more bags dropping off the top of your case! The standout feature of this bag is the large opening front panel, providing excellent access to the main compartment. Despite its 'carry-on luggage' size I was able to pack a lot - combined with some TomToc travel pouches it proved to be a flexible functional travel bag. I purchased the additional bags to use as bags to store a lot of my 'tech gadgets' - cameras, drones, cables, tools and more. These bags are very versatile while maintaining a stylish appearance and excellent quality.

Excelente!
