Product Description A reluctant South Carolina farmer (Mel Gibson) is forced to fight the British in this adventure epic set during the time of the American Revolution. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards® (2000) - including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound - The Patriot is a gripping tale of war and family, now fully remastered in 4K. desertcart.co.uk Review Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvellous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop. On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honour exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon Review: Very good period drama film - It is a very good film good actors in it and a great storyline Review: Thoroughly Enjoyed It - I am an American/British dual citizen and I cant say as I even marginally agree with the reviewers saying this film is thoroughly anti British, it may have an aspect of that but how many TV series have the English made which make the French look evil. How many films have the English AND Americans made about the Germans being evil? This film is made from an American point of view you cannot expect it to portray the British as the most wonderful people ever. In the film there is only one British man that is `evil' and the troops under his command kill innocent Americans under his orders and with objection. Mr Gibson is painting one man as evil not a nation so stop with your feeling hard done by and griping over nothing. Overall I think Mr Gibson makes the British look like a very noble nation through the gentlemanly actions of their high commander and other commanders, infact you could rightly argue that the British are overall portrayed as much more honorable than their American counterparts. I am especially baffled by the fact that a self proclaimed history lecturer is so narrow minded, I hope that if I ever have children you are not the one teaching them. I would have hoped that someone entrusted with teaching new generations about history would be more open to the fact that you can never KNOW for sure what happened. Finally to the omnipresent reviewer who said that s/he was sure the British had never burned a church. I am sure and couldn't agree more that in the many years of the British Empire nobody innocent was hurt and that no rogue commanders ever ordered their men to slaughter innocent people (that was sarcasm the British have and had just as much capacity for being evil as the Americans, Germans, French and Mel Gibson). These reviewers are however right in regards to the fact that the black people portrayed in this film do seem very unrealistic when compared with historical accounts of what it was to be black in those times. They are all treated well and all seem really happy with life, doubtless a few of them were but I do find it very strange that there was only once that one was mistreated. I personally think that this movie is brilliant. There are a couple of points where the American pride is cringe worthy but it wouldn't be a classic Mel film if there wasn't. Trust me when I say this is a great film and unless you are super uptight you will not be offended. Take a step back and enjoy it, this is a fictional movie and it never claims to be based solidly on fact. If you are British watch this brilliant movie, get past some of the laughable Americana like Mel running with the flag at the end and see if the British really are portrayed badly. If you feel they are then give me a negative review though to be honest I doubt very much that you will. The people writing that this film is anti-British are the exact type that probably watch movies on how the British defeated the `evil' Napoleon and think it is wonderful. Thank you for your time for reading my longest ever review and enjoy.

The Patriot is an outstanding DVD that I have enjoyed watching over and over again. The service from Amazon was good and I received the product with minimal stress, a rare pleasure for some of the items I have order on-line. The DVD is quality and the narrative is gripping and engaging for the audience. The actors have each consumed their characters, having a very detailed and elaborate sense of characterisation that is easy to identify as an audience. The characters within the film engage the audience allowing you to empathise and want the best for them as though you are part of their lives. A very well directed DVD. A timeless classic. :) The Patriot [DVD] [2000

great film
But not historically accurate, the Hollywood wood film makers Changed history again even to the point the Americans winning The battle at the end, even though they didn't. I bit of Britain Bashing went on here ,but it showed war in in its true horror Here. Mel Gibson as stated plays a reluctant soldier preferring To care for his family after seeing the horrors of one war already And you can't blame him. colonel tavingtonwas based on colonel tarlton A British cavalry commander reputable to carry out brutal tactics. But in fairness after one battle the Americans out up the white flag, as the colonel Went to accept it some colonial changes their minds and shot at him and bringing him down His men outraged 're opened the assault Some part of the film was accurate as in the British didn't want the War in the first place and had already given in to some protests prior to the Boston tea party. King George may have wanted to keep the colonies But the British parliament would have given them up later on. The battle Scenes we're accurate the red coats were excellent at what they did . One or two volleys then bayonet charge.in fact the British bayonet Training is still part of the British infantry training and has been used in Combat in Iraq and Afghanistan .Gibson has been accused of anti British Sentiment again refer to brave heart which was very inaccurate History and this film where the British burnt down a church with civilians inside That didn't happen at all
