does the lip at the front stop it from being mounted above another item?

I wondered that, and the answer is no. The lip is included in the 2U height, so essentially the shelf space isn't 2U in height as the overall shelf (with the lip) fits in a 2U section. I have devices both above and below my shelf and it fits perfectly.

can you please explain what cantilever means on the unit. thank you

The definition of cantilever is that it is a fixed at only one end. Hence the shelf is bolted to the rack at the front, and hangs out towards the middle / back of the rack with no other fixing.

Is the 2u height 16”. is that 16 inch by 16 inch square ? to fit ableton push 2 nicely on there ;) thanks
