It's difficult to tell from the picture how big the ball is, is it larger than a normal tennis ball to make it easier to hit?

No it is the same size as a normal tennis ball. I guess it is just the way the picture is taken, that it may give that illusion.

Is this version suitable for a six year old, or too short? Thank you

The top that is supposed to go around doesn’t work properly. Better to get one with a metal ring, especially for a 6 year old. My kids 2 and 4 don’t mind as they don’t really play, but a 6 yr old will know the game and want to play for real.

Is the ball soft so kids aren't hurt if hit in the face

The ball is softer than a tennis ball, can be compressed a little bit when squashed, is smooth on the surface but if hit hard and and came into contact with some-ones face, it would certainly be felt. My grand-daughter has had no mishaps and played with it quite a lot, usually with me on the other racket. Have fun!!
