How does it work catching a spider that's on the floor?

It's brill you just open the plastic door put it over the spider close it back up, you may have to do slowly so that the spider runs to the other end and you don't catch his lovely little furry legs, then walk outside put it down on the floor open the plastic door, lift it up and watch him run, hopefully in the right direction! I broke my other one and just had to get a new one.

The sliding door on the product I have does not open and close by twisting the handle as advertised. Am I doing something wrong?

Its more that you turn the product by the handle than twist the actual handle. Once the spider is trapped keep the pressure on it and slide the trapdoor in place locking the spider in. Its easier to slide the trap door than turn the product as turning allows time and space for the spider to escape. Excellent product and lifesaver if you get the right technique.

how long s the handle

The handle itself comes in two parts which fit together and is approx. 13 inches. When attached to the catcher part there is 14 inches between the end of the handle and the bit that holds the spider .... so keeps you at a nice distance. I find this really user friendly, wouldn't be without it.

Does this work on thick carpets or just on the wall pls

I don't have thick carpets, I have wooden flooring so not sure. It will only work for you if the carpet is flat enough to slide the door at the bottom across on the carpet. You may be best off getting the other type with a pump and a circular cylinder that sucks them up and you have to then put the plug in the bottom of it once you have caught them. I would also get an insecticide and spray around doors/windows and any areas you think they might be getting in from to stop them coming in.
