Its a mildly abrasive powder. So yes, it does help remove stains. If you have severe staining then you might want to try a "Wisdom tooth stain remover" Its like a toothbrush but with a special stain removing tip

Should this be used with a normal toothbrush or will my ultrasonic brush be just as effective?

You can use it with any toothbrush. My dad uses a manual toothbrush with it absolutely fine and his electric one, works just as well. It’s very versatile
