Hazel Soan's book - Watercolour Rainbow: Exploring the colours in your palette is a very useful source for information for both beginning and intermediate artists. The book explains characteristics of various colours - pigments used for making paints, details of various watercolours transparency and opacity and gives a hints regarding mixing paints together. The book also covers several painting techniques like blending and mixing.The pictures illustrating the book are top quality - I'm amazed how much life the author can put into her paintings, creating a convincing effect with only a few shapes. Her style is very clean and yet dynamic.I recommend this book as useful source - even in age of YouTube tutorials.

Hazel knows the old rules so well, she automatically integrates them into a new style, without you knowing how well she uses light and colour mixing. She has a light but knowledgeable touch. There is nothing to dislike.When you immediately try it out, it works, and you like it, but also realize it is cleverly thought about and planned prior to brush on paper. If you remember the old days where you were told to grasp the brush by the top third of the handle and stand back away from your pallet, do breath new air, and paint with freedom.Parts of a painting not in great detail, ask the brain to fill in for itself. Much more satisfying when looking at the work.The book is to be recommended to all, beginner, or well and long immersed in "how to paint." Try it.

I loved the concept of Hazel's new book in which she discusses the technicalities of individual watercolour paints, expanding on the concepts of transparent & opaque, staining & non staining & suggesting effective colour combinations. This is not really a book aimed at the novice; the same author has numerous books eg "10 minute watercolours" & "what shall I paint" which aim to teach the basics. This book aims to build on those basics to enhance the experience of using watercolour paint, based on the author's comprehensive knowledge of her subject. The book is clearly written and beautifully illustrated and anyone who reads it will be better informed and inspired by her obvious passion for painting

This is an inspirational book for all watercolour artists from beginners to professionals. A must read. Hazel explores every aspect of colour mixing, characteristics of pigment, transparency and opacity and advice on colour combinations to create a vibrant and exciting painting. All her advice is combined with an astonishing variety of art work which will provide something for everyone. It has been written and prepared with a great deal of thought and a genuine love of watercolour. Hazel is extremely generous with her knowledge and this book is proof of her expertise and talent which she is so keen to share with others. A fantastic book and well deserves five stars.

I love this book. I am a non-professional artist and find this book very useful for colour mixing and technical help. I have bought this 3 times as a present for watercolourist friends as I think it is a brilliant easy to read and understand book.

This is a beautiful book and full of excellent technical advice about the use of colours. I kept borrowing this from my local library and decided that I needed my own copy so i could annotate it and keep it as a reference - to my own paints

What a beautiful book. I look forward to spending time really studying Hazel's work.I didn't need another book to go on the shelf., But this is so informative it has a place of honour by my chair.I will be ordering Hazel's other books.

Da ich Wasserfarben liebe aber keinerlei Kunsterfahrung habe wollte ich endlich ein Fachbuch, das mich inspiriert. Da fiel mir das Cover ins Auge. Allein die farbenprächtigen Bilder haben mich sehr angesprochen. Das Verblenden der Farben und bestimmte Affekte erzielen wird sehr gut erklärt und ich finde es als Anfänger auch sehr hilfreich. Anbei gleich mein 1. Versuch auf zu kleinem Papier. Nicht zögern. Holt es euch. Habe schon ein weiteres Buch von ihr bestellt!

Another great book from my favorite artist Hazel Soan. Most of us begin our watercolor journey by using standard colours and keep using colors without mixing much with a fear of getting muddiness or dull colors. This book gives an excellent information on how and which colors can be mixed to get vibrant and transparent appearance. Excellent paintings supporting the content.
