So great! The airline frequently questions whether or not the larger portion will fit into the overhead and I always just tell them let me try it and it always fits. The bag is perfectly sized. The fact that I can detach and reattach the separate personal item bag is also amazing. When I’m walking through the airport, it’s so nice to just have everything on my back in one package; simultaneously it’s so nice to be able to separate them when needed to fit onto the airplane. The larger bag is as comfortable as could reasonably be expected for a bag of this size and carrying capacity. The mesh pockets on the side of the personal item bag are large enough to hold my Nalgene bottle or a hat or whatever else is needed. After one trip, the durability seems to be good. NO RAGRETS (as they say)

Bought the 40L travel backpack to use on a recent trip to Europe. The 40L accommodated everything I wanted to take with me without issue. I’ve traveled a lot over the years for both business and pleasure and I’ve learned how to travel light, so the 40L was plenty of space for me. I make use of compression packing cubes to keep everything organized and I’ve simply just learned to not overpack. Overall, the pack feels very well made from quality materials, so I believe it should last being subjected to the type of robust traveling I do. Zippers seem sturdy and all seams are well sewn. The handles are robust and well cushioned. I had no problem carrying the pack by hand. I also like the simplicity of the bag. One big packing compartment and a zippered mesh compartment. No interior dividers or extra zippered pockets means more packing space for the things I want to carry. Again, I use packing cubes and drawstring bags to keep everything organized. Used it in both duffle bag mode and backpack mode. I like that I can hide the shoulder straps behind the zippered cover for boarding planes and trains. It made getting the travel pack through the aisles and up into the overhead bins easier. I had no problems fitting it into the overhead bins and the airlines didn’t flag me for having too big of a carry-on or a “backpack”. The handles at the top of the bag and on the side helped with getting it out of the overhead compartment and off the plane. It was also comfortable when I used it as a backpack. The fully adjustable strap system with hip belt allows you to find a fit that is comfortable for your body. Using the compression straps on the back to hold my jacket in place when not in use is also a plus. And on the 40L you get the accessible, top pocket to hold smaller items, which I like as it’s nice to have a pocket for quick access to certain smaller things. Note, the 55L version does not have this top pocket/compartment as Osprey assumes you will be using the included 15L travel daypack as part of your travel system. There’s a back pocket underneath the compression straps that’s deep enough for a light sweater, water bottle, snacks, etc. A few things to note on the design. First would be to add more, softer padding to the laptop sleeve behind the shoulder straps. I feel like the padding for the laptop sleeve is a bit “stiff”. My laptop survived the trip with no problems, but I didn’t bang the backpack around very much. Also, the laptop sleeve extends inside the main compartment of the bag and is held in place on each corner by a hook and loop system. This allows the laptop sleeve to be lifted up, maybe so you can place something under the sleeve such as papers. I’m not entirely sure why Osprey designed the laptop sleeve this way, but that’s the design. So, you will be packing items directly on top of the laptop sleeve in the main compartment. This was not a deal breaker for me, but the user should be aware of this system. You also access the laptop compartment from the side of the bag instead of the top. Not an issue for me but for some users they may not like that system. I had no problem fitting my iPad Air and 14” PC in the computer sleeve. The shape of the travel pack is more oval or teardrop than square with the oval being slightly bigger at the base of the bag. Some people may prefer a square packing compartment over this design but I had no packing issues. Just make a mental note of it. The straps have excessive length and dangle. I’m assuming this is to accommodate all body sizes and clothing bulk. It’d be great if Osprey provided strap retainers to make the excess strap lengths more organized, but they don’t. I ended up 3D printing simple strap organizers which did the trick of eliminating the dangling issue. Fortunately, if you don’t have an 3D printer, Amazon sells strap retainers, so a purchaser should consider getting some if dangling straps bother them. You say you can’t decide between the 40L and 55L? Let me give you some clarity to help. The 55L Farpoint main pack is exactly the same packing size as the 40L. In order to get the additional 15L in packing space, Osprey added a 15L, detachable travel daypack that sits on top of the main pack. Yes, the 15L travel daypack is a nice feature. It gives you a detachable, 15L smaller backpack that you can use separately from the travel backpack for when you’re touring around a city. Some people might like the 15L travel daypack addition, but not me. I chose to go in a different direction and use the Osprey 13L Daylite pack instead. The 13L Osprey Daylite pack incorporates/attaches well with/to my 40L Farpoint and I prefer it over the 15L travel daypack for many reasons that are too long for this review. Overall, for the price (I bought mine when it was on sale), this is a solid travel backpack. It has a good cost to quality to usefulness ratio. Yes there are other, more expensive travel backpacks out there that are geared towards world travel adventures - but this one will be more than sufficient for the average, on-the-go traveler who goes on a few trips each year.

I am going to do a trip with no luggage as Ill be going on a trek. So, I needed a travel backpack, with a clamshell opening, proper compression straps, a hip belt, and sturdy as hell. Ive practiced by carrying 18lbs of gear on hikes. This has done well so far. I really like all the straps. It seems like a lot, but its mainly for adjusting the weight and adjusting for your height. Adjust it so that the weight falls on your hips and not shoulders. Outer material is sturdy and straps look solid. I also like that mine is red inside, so I can easily see small things inside via contrast. There is also a flap that can cover the straps and turn it into a big suitcase with clean interface. Compression straps inside and outside. Medium pocket on top and store small objects on the mesh inside, Water bottle just goes into the pouch outside, very small pocket on the left hip belt. Other than that, no other small storage. Im happy with the 40L as that is capable for carryon.

I’ve taken this backpack on two trips and it’s worked out great. There is room for a lot inside, though I recommend something like packing cubes to help with organizing the contents. There are handy straps inside for keeping stuff in place, and I like that one can adjust the straps a lot including putting them away entirely for packing away into a car or airplane. Super comfy to wear, though I’m probably borderline fat for the belly strap (a reminder to walk more and eat less on travels perhaps - I’m larger than most folks around the waist). I had one incident where one of the strap pieces came off while putting into an overhead bin, but I saw it happen and retrieved it. I’m not sure how to prevent this other than to be careful that straps don’t snag in that situation. Otherwise, for this price, a fabulous backpack that replaced two separate carryon pieces (courier bag and a cpap bag). TL;DR It’s a great backpack and inexpensive, felt secure out in public and never felt like stuff would get damaged or ruined or lost while out and about.

Good bag, can fit a good amount of clothes. Fits fine under seat in airplane. Has two pouches for drinks. You can cinch the bag down also strap clothing down. There is a protective area for laptops Cons: the packet for incidental stuff is too small. No side pocket for cables, etc.

Been using the Farpoint 40 for a few trips now and it’s easily one of the best travel backpacks I’ve owned. Perfect size for carry-on but still holds loads of gear thanks to the smart layout and compression straps. Super comfy to wear, even when fully loaded, and the straps tuck away neatly if you’re checking it in. Loads of handy pockets too for organising everything. Only thing is the back panel can get a bit warm on hot days, but that's to be expected with any big pack. Top quality build and worth every penny for travellers.

Ospray Farpoint is nog steeds een begrip onder de travel backpacks. Ik had jaren de (oudere) 70 liter versie van deze backpack met de afneembare rugzak. Echter ik merk dat ik niet meer zoveel inhoud nodig en en wil voorkomen dat ik teveel dingen meeneem die ik niet nodig heb. Dit scheelt heel veel tillen en pijn aan mijn rug. Daarom ben ik over gegaan op de 40 liter versie van de Farpoint en ik ben zeer tevreden. Voordelen tov andere travel backpacks zijn: - Het rugpand is verstelbaar in hoogte en heeft een intern fame, dit verhoogt het draagcomfort enorm - De schouder- en heupbanden zijn van de hoogste kwaliteit en goed gevoerd, ook dit verhoogt het draagcomfort. Handig is het mesh zakje op de heupband. Dit had mijn oude versie niet. - Het ontwerp van de rugzak is doordacht, het heeft een enigszins brede, vlakke vorm die zowel verticaal als horizontaal goed om het lichaam sluit. Hierdoor wordt de last goed verdeeld en trekt het gewicht van de rugzak je niet aan je schouders naar achteren. Ook de loadlifter straps aan de bovenzijde van de schouderriemen zorgen ervoor dat de tas nauw op het lichaam aansluit en de last gelijkmatig over je rug verdeeld wordt. - Compressiebanden geven de mogelijkheid om de rugzak goed aan te snoeren en ook in volume te verkleinen zodra deze niet volledig gevuld is. Dit verhoogt ook weer het draagcomfort. Ook kan door de slim geplaatste compressiebanden eenvoudig een kleine daypack aan de rugzak worden bevestigd. Dit gaat ook prima met mijn niet-Ospray (maar Millet) dagrugzak. - De mogelijkheid om met een dichtritsbare flap de schouder- en heupbanden weg te bergen is ideaal voor vliegtuigen, treinen etc. Ze zitten dan niet in de weg bij het lopen door smalle gangpaden en opbergen in het bagagerek. Bovendien zijn er 2 stevige en comfortabele handgrepen zodat de tas dan goed te dragen en hanteren is. - Het is ontzettend handig dat de rugzak volledig open kan. Hierdoor heb je bij het inpakken en uitpakken goed overzicht over je spullen. Ik adviseer om packing cubes te gebruiken zodat alles netjes op zijn plaats blijft en er zoveel mogelijk in je rugzak kan. Met de interne straps van de rugzak kan je deze goed vastzetten. - Het laptop vak zit veilig aan rugzijde en is via een zijrits toegangkelijk. Er past ook een grote laptop in. - De ritsen zijn van zeer hoge kwaliteit (YKK) en de tas is zo ontworpen dat er geen scherpe hoeken / rondingen in de ritsen zitten, waardoor ze gemakkelijk open en dicht gaan. - Ook het polyester materiaal van de rugzak zelf is van zeer hoge kwaliteit: stevig, flexibel en mooi glad, zodat vuil er niet op hecht. Dit is in de praktijk zo prettig tov andere rugzakken waar haren, vuil etc steeds aan blijft kleven. Verbeterpunten: - Een (mesh?) pocket voor een waterfles aan de zijkant zou prettig zijn. - Het grote steekvak aan de voorkant moet aan de bovenzijde niet vastgenaaid zijn maar een losmaakbare buckle hebben, dan wordt het goed toegankelijk. Nu is het instoppen en uithalen van een kledingstuk o.i.d. erg lastig. - Het laptop compartiment is overdadig dik gewatteerd, mijns inziens is dat niet nodig en neemt veel ruimte in beslag. De helft van de huidige padding is al meer dan voldoende. Het zit immers veilig tussen de bagage (kleding) en het starre rugpand gesitueerd. Ook zit het laptop compartiment nu wat vreemd los in het binnenvak, maar is niet verwijderbaar. Het zou handig zijn als het volledig verwijderbaar is voor degenen die het niet nodig hebben, zo blijft er veel meer packing ruimte over. - De straps moeten standaard strapholders krijgen zodat er geen loshangende straps meer zijn bij de toploader straps, schouderstraps, heupstraps en borststrap. Dit scheel heel veel gebungel van losse einden en is echt veel prettiger. Het kost bijna niets aan materiaal om dit toe te voegen en is lastig/niet toe te voegen bij reeds geïnstalleerde straps, dus alsjeblieft Osprey, doe dit nou! - Iets meer organisatie in het topvak voor kleine spullen zou erg prettig zijn, net als een klein extra rugvak (aan de andere zijde dan het laptop compartiment) om belangrijke spullen veilig op te bergen (paspoort, telefoon, etc) terwijl het toch snel bereikbaar is. Dit is een kleine investering van 1 rits en wat stof en maakt de rugzak veel flexibeler in het gebruik. - Als het ontwerp zo aangepast kan worden dat de volle rugzak uit zichzelf blijft staan door een vlakke stevige bodem zou dit ideaal zijn, dit moet echter niet ten koste gaan van het draagcomfort! Het zijn best wat verbeterpunten maar vergis je niet, dit is echt een uitstekende rugzak en ik beveel hem 100% aan!
