Silverline Ignition Spark Tester 270mm (633982)

After several reviews complaining about failed bulbs, I ordered this with some trepidation. I needn't have worried. The device is extremely simple: you plug it in between the existing HT lead and existing plug, and it flashes neon-red every time the plug sparks. I was concerned that the gadget wouldn't fit the plug in my mower: it fitted just fine. (In fact, I didn't find a plug it didn't fit - even motorcycle plugs were OK. It seems pretty universal.) Perhaps the only drawback is the male contact (the stick bit, that fits the existing HT lead) is quite long - great for when you've got shrouded leads, but a bit awkward when you haven't (because you have to make sure it comes nowhere near any earthed metal. I'm going to try wrapping a piece of heat-shrink onto it. I found the flash to be clear and perfectly bright enough for my workshop, (note to reviewers who said the bulb was dead on delivery: it's a neon - it's not supposed to to test continuous!) and it saved me hours tracking down a fault in a magneto circuit. Overall, great little product, great price, seems very reliable (nothing really to go wrong). I can see it will be part of my toolbox for years to come.

Bought this as a means to test my ignition system on my brother's car. Too make sure that the ignition system works.

This attaches easily between HT lead and plug top - its a clip on fitting rather than a screw fitting so you'll need a screwcap rather than a thread on the top of the plug. The flickering light is very difficult to see if you're using it in bright daylight but once out of the sun or shrouded a bit then it's clear enough. Proved my outboard plugs were getting a spark, so the non-start thing must be something else...
