FIFA’s back!
If you’ve owned Nintendo consoles over the past decade, then you’ll need no reminder of how gimmicks and an eventual lack of support hampered the brand. And now here we are with FIFA 18 - a release that is by far and away the FIFA experience on a Nintendo console yet.It isn’t perfect, so let’s get a couple of niggles out of the way. You can’t play with Switch friends online, and that is quite frankly ridiculous, though this isn’t EA’s fault. Also, the popular Classic XI team is surprisingly absent, so that will be sorely missed. There are of course omissions that apply only to Switch - The Journey game mode being the most talked about. Since the animation is powered by the Frostbite engine, you won’t see the latest visual nuances in this Switch release, but it would be harsh to call this a deal breaker.FIFA 18 for Switch lies between the PS3/360 and PS4/XB1 in terms of its technical prowess, but most will agree that it actually balances more towards the latter. Frankly, the games looks beautiful and you would be hard pressed to see these differences out of cutscenes and closeups. The gameplay is fluid and well balanced, with great attention to detail across all aspects of the game. Defending is sensible with good jostling and realistic tacking, passing can be customised to a high degree (Keeping things in full manual can enhance your creativity) and shooting is fun. If you take the time to learn many of the controls, you can pull off some surprising moves! The Journey aside, all the game modes you would expect are here and equal to other formats. I love the new main menu with its quick access to each panel, and the ability to use the shoulder buttons to flick through pages quickly. Loading times are also better than other formats, mostly probably due to the lack of optical media.I’m really glad that EA have made a good effort with this release, and the results show. It’s a solid title that ‘just works’, and I would have no hesitation in reccomending it.

A great 1st effort for the Switch
Whilst certainly not perfect (more on that in a moment) this is an absolutely solid 1st offering from EA for the Nintendo Switch. To start with, this game runs beautifully, a seamless 60fps in both docked and undocked mode, a real achievement. Graphically it's decent, cutscenes aside, squint and you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between this and the PS4/XBONE versions. It does include Ultimate team, which is a really nice thought (FIFA ULTIMATE TEAM ANYWHERE) and a career mode, which is playable but ultimately is a reskin of last years offering, not the new shiny mode that the other consoles get. THERE IS NO JOURNEY MODE.There is an option for local multiplayer with single Joy Cons, very limited due to a lack of buttons (no finesse shots!!!) but perfectly playable for a quick game on the train I would imagine.Another major gripe is the fact that you can't play an online game with someone from your friends list. Seriously, online is completely random. Hopefully this will be addressed with a future patch, most likely when the paid online service from Nintendo goes live in 2018.All in all, this game plays very well, looks sharp and clean and despite missing a few of the new features, is a very decent effort. If you own a PS4 or XBONE and don't plan on playing on the go, it's probably best to steer clear of this. Otherwise, it's certainly a very nice version, call it FIFA 18 Lite maybe.....

Best handheld football game ever
I was rather dubious about this - having owned Vita and 3ds versions of Fifa in the past and knowing EA's tendency to put minimal efforts into handheld ports. The fact they had a review embargo until today made me even more anxious it would disappoint. The good news is it is great. It looks stunning on the handheld mode and runs at an impressive 60fps handheld and docked. It is not a port of the PS4 / Xbox version - it has been built specifically for the Switch and should be viewed as an entirely different beast. It has plenty of content, the presentation is clean and menus easy to navigate. On the pitch it runs very smoothly and feels very close to traditional console Fifa. The absolute selling point is that it's on the go - you can play with a friend on the go, team mates or vs and against other players online with ease. It's a fantastic portable version of Fifa - highly recommended.

Great wee FIFA game for the wee switch but nothing compared to the Xbox version and the sound in game is not great but overall great to on the go

A welcome return to Nintendo for FIFA
I had been somewhat nervously awaiting the release of FIFA 18 for the Switch due to the lack of EA support previously for Nintendo consoles, and especially in the few days leading up the release day where there were concerns around the lack of review codes being circulated.Fortunately I had nothing to worry about. The game plays really well, and has plenty of options to keep me busy. The ability to play on the move, whether that be in bed or on the commute, is a huge benefit that the Switch version has over the others. That being said, this clearly isn't the XB1/PS4 version (and nor was it ever going to be) so there are some sacrifices that players may need to make but in my opinion there is nothing fundamental missing, other than the glaring omission of being able to play a friend online (which I hope will be fixed by a software or hardware update in the future).I would have no hesitation recommending this to others.

Good game missing a few features.
Okay sooooo....Fifa 18 on the switch! First off the game plays really well, smooth, good loading times, graphically not on par with the Xbox one/PS4 but that's to be expected. In handheld mode with a 6" display it looks goods and plays well. Docked mode gives a visual improvement which is a bonus. Game modes are there bar the frostbite engine journey mode which is a little disappointing. FIFA ultimate team is there and is great to have on the Nintendo console and I'm sure in future releases it will become a mainstay. Now to some of the negatives that have deemed it a 4 star version and not a 5. Online co-op mode is missing, no ability to start a match with a friend online either, you have to do this locally which is a nice touch but isn't always practicable. Manager mode has had no improvements over previous versions like the xbox/ps4 versions have seen. Also little touches like when a player it doesn't tell you how many they've scored for the season ect which I think would have been an easy addition to the game. Even little things like the game clock which changes depending on the competition your playing in hasn't been added in which again can't have been a hard add to this game. Overall I'm happy with this title, it's a quick pick up and play type of game with a solid basis and hopefully EA build on this in future releases. 4/5

No idea - still signing up for the various accounts needed to play
Impeccable delivery as usual from amazon prime. My just turned 8 year old son was so pleased when I told him this game was on special offer (thanks amazon) as he had played it at his friends house on PS4. He used his birthday money to buy it. Honestly, it took longer to get it going than for amazon to deliver it! Insert game cartridge. Nothing. Download updates. Nothing. Reboot Nintendo switch - had to google this tip! Game loads. Asked to create Nintendo account. Game continues to load. Asked to create ea sports account. Game continues to load. 10 separate emails so far from Nintendo and ea sports all of which needed links clicking, user names creating (and that is another long story ...) and and security codes and verification codes entering. Privacy issues? In game purchases to come? I am sure that this is the way of the world nowadays and I am a fuddy duddy and a bit of a Victorian Dad but why is all of this necessary? Yes, of course If you want to play online but for an 8 year old boy who just wants to plug the game in and play not a positive experience at all. Quite a contrast to mario kart and mario odyssey which my son also bought with various money given to him.
