I'm sorry but both these answers are wrong. The UK's Sale of Goods Act, 1979 gives you one full year's of no quibble return to base warranty for repair or replacement without you paying a single penny extra, as long as the item has been adequately maintained BUT the manufacturer must also be responsible for any adverse condition of the item for another six years, making this seven years in total. In 2015, this law was strengthened by the Consumer Rights Act, which in 1979 did not include digital equipment such as mobile phones and computers or gaming machines.

Does this really playback files (eg mkv etc) from an external hard drive which is only powered from the usb and does not have its own power supply?

The unit is actually quite powerful and I was surprised to see that it DOES read from external 1TB 2,5 HDDs with no need for the drives to be powered separately. It does read mkv files, although, unlike an LG BR Home Theater I also have, where I can browse inside an mkv file by pressing the next/previous buttons (the player jumps a few minutes forwards or backwards), with this unit if you press next it will jump to the next movie in your usb drive. No biggie, as one can quickly skip ford/backwds by going into the INFO/MENU, then OPTION and changing the time in then the second option from the top, but it does requires extra steps.
