Much better WiFi performance than my very expensive router!
I've had this item for 9 months and use it almost every day. Pros: -It's easy to set up and relatively small. -It works well when it's in range of the base wifi station Cons: -It needs to be set up very near your base WiFi station. I have mine about 5 metres from my base WiFi station and it sometimes struggles to get a good signal. If it doesn't have a good signal (like in a hotel, on a campsite, etc) it will keep cutting out and restarting itself. It doesn't do this if the signal to the base station is good. -It is not very configurable. I'm a network admin, and there aren't many settings here for power users. They've made a lot of effort to make this thing easily configurable for general users, but the advanced options are very sparse. The antennas aren't interchangeable, and seem a bit flimsy. This isn't a problem if it's always plugged into the wall, but I don't feel comfortable taking it with me when I travel, because I don't think the antennas would survive a journey in my bag. Conclusion: I wouldn't buy this item again, as it isn't quite fit for purpose. I was hoping that due to the external antennas that it'd have much better WiFi reception than my phone and tablet devices, but actually it doesn't manage very well. For use in a house, it will work well as long as it's quite near to your router. If you want to use this in a hotel or on a campsite to boost the wifi signal, you will be left disappointed. Update: I've given this device a new lease of life as an access point, connected to the internet via an ethernet connection, and have been blown away by the results. As mentioned in my previous review (above), the performance when you extend a WiFi network is very poor, but this device really shines when you use this thing as a standalone access point. The coverage and connection speed is very impressive. I get better results with it than I did with my router. I've now switched the WiFi off on my router, and use it as a fancy modem, and this little device is my new wifi access point. I'm increasing my rating to 5 stars. If you're going to extend a WiFi network, you should really cable in your other access points, rather than try to use a Wireless connection to the base station. You will only ever give yourself problems with performance if you do, and end up with a fragile network. This is a fundamental problem with WiFi, and therefore not the fault of the device. The device itself performs incredibly well, especially when you consider how cheap it is, and how many years I've been using it.

Easy to set up......without WPS
I found that this item was easy to set up using the manufacturer's own instructions after I ignored pairing it with my Talktalk router using the WPS function: to be honest, I have been unable to pair anything with the Talktalk modem using WPS and suspect if is the modem where the issue lies. Using the instructions in the manual and a web browser, this item was set up adjacent to the router in minutes and then transferred to a point which receives a reasonable signal, amplifies the signal and transmits it to a spot in our home where we have always struggled to get a signal. The signal comes through clear and is stable. May I RECOMMEND to anyone setting this item up that they forget WPS and set it up via the browser using the step by step instructions - it will be quicker (even if the WPS function works) as you set up the 2.4 and 5.0 Mhz frequencies simultaneously, whereas, if you set it up via WPS, you have to set it up twice! Accessing the wi-fi signal, I have two hotspots, the 2.4 setting and the 5.0 setting. Strangely I need 2.4 Mhz signals for a wi-fi accessed security camera adjacent to the blind spot and so for me, I do need both frequencies - most people with up to date equipment should not. Great item. It receives the signal, boosts it and simply works. One final thing, it actually does speed up access to the internet for a number of our devices. We have tested two ipads with the extender adjacent to our talk talk hub, accessing the signal using identical ipads, the extender was marginally faster when either was connect to it.

BUYER BEWARE-If things go wrong after 90 days the customer support is virtually non-existent!!
*EDIT-22/02/20 Would like to add that after a week of my initial review a second person from Netgear tech support contacted me and arranged a free post return of my broken extender for a new one which was delivered in 48 hours. It’s a shame it took some time for my problem to be rectified after my initial contact but I have to give credit where it’s due to the guy who eventually sorted everything out for me. *Initial Review I’ll start by saying that when these products work they’re actually great and truly do boost the signal considerably to previously ‘dead spots’ that you might have in your home. I’ve had a few netgear products now and when they work they’re brilliant reliable devices but that’s where my good points end. If there’s ever an issue with the connectivity and signal of your device and you’ve been through all the usual troubleshooting and diagnostics such as resetting the extender and router, trying to reconnect to no avail or trying to initiate a return of a faulty device then you will REALLY struggle to get the help you need with your product. My latest extender device ran well for the past 6 months before problems started with disconnects and the device itself getting very hot to the touch this past week to the point where I felt it was unsafe to use. I’m a fairly tech-savvy person so I can trouble shoot and try all the various fixes, firmware updates etc myself that the website advises. Their website isn’t very user friendly and after managing to get a message sent on their support page someone rang my phone and I was told to go back through the previous trouble shooting I’d already tried myself, which I didn't mind as that’s their job to make sure everything has been tried and checked to verify and possible error being made on the customers part. However the lady on the phone was very unprofessional and condescending, she was actually laughing and sniggering under her breath down the phone at one point when I asked her to repeat her advice or not fully understanding her directions because of our language and accent differences. Then she informed me that unless I’d allow her remote access to my computer for her to run some further tests then there’d be nothing more she could do for me. I felt uncomfortable about this because of her previous manner and because it felt intrusive to allow someone remote access to my PC who I’d only spoke to a few moments and it felt a bit forced as the fact I was absolutely sure the product was broke because of the issues and overheating. I told her that I’d like to speak to her supervisor or other associate to discuss an alternative or replacement because I was still in warranty and was certain that the extender was broken and would be happy to pay postage to send it back to test to prove this. She then said that I’d have to call another section of the company on a premium rate number that was definitely not a UK number and that I could not find on any web search to verify it’s authenticity and when I protested about the possible costs of this call she was blunt, rude and unhelpful. Finally I asked if there was any way to chat by email, free phone or webchat as I felt we were getting nowhere and she said this was not possible and I’d have to ring the number given to discuss my warranty and possible replacement. She then gave me a case number and reiterated that I should call the other number she gave me despite me saying it would be an expensive call on the number given and I’d rather they call me or email. She also reiterated that there was no other way for me to contact netgear except on the number given and there was no email address to try for further support. At this point I just thought it’s not worth the hassle and stress and so have just ordered a new extender from a different company who has excellent reviews and a myriad different ways to contact their customer support if things go wrong. I just want people to be aware that although these products are great when they’re working if things go wrong and they need assistance then their customer support leaves a lot to be desired compared to various other companies I’ve had dealings with and if I’d known how severely limited the options and ways of contacting customer support was I’d never have spent a penny with this company and certainly won’t be ever again. You have been warned!

I recently purchased the Netgear WiFi extender to improve the internet speed and connectivity in my house. Although the device has worked well for me, I must say that the initial installation was a bit tricky and required some patience. The setup instructions provided with the extender were not very clear and it took me a while to figure out how to connect the device to my network. It was a bit frustrating to have to go through multiple steps and have to reset the device a couple of times before I was able to get it working properly. That being said, once I got the Netgear WiFi extender set up, it worked really well. It significantly increased the strength and coverage of my WiFi signal, making it easy to connect all my devices to my network without any trouble. The extender is also very responsive and doesn't slow down my internet speed as some other extenders on the market tend to do. Overall, while the initial installation of the Netgear WiFi extender was a bit tricky, I am pleased with the product's performance and the improvement it has made to my internet connectivity. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and effective solution to improve their WiFi signal, just be prepared to take some time and effort to set it up correctly.
