Great little book
I recommend this book! It can be used a couple of different ways.If you are homeschooling, it is a great choice for a poetry study for middle or high school. It is inexpensive, has a Christian worldview, and is a stand alone book. You can go as far as you want into the book, or just do a few chapters as an introduction to poetry. If you are a student or adult interested in writing, this is a great book for inspiration! It focuses on poetry, but I think any writer of fiction would find value in it as many of the skills would carry over. It doesn't "feel" like a textbook because it is a small paperback, and the author writes to the reader in a personal way. It's not boring like some textbooks! I think most adults could read this book and find it interesting, inspiring, helpful and much of it would be new information!I am reading this book, and doing some of the exercises in it, with three girls ages 12 and 13. I love that the author often refers to the Bible and God's creation as her inspiration and in examples for teaching. We do some of the Stepping Stones exercises she includes in the book, but not all of them. We are memorizing poetry (with the poetry program from Institute for Excellence in Writing, [...]) along with reading this book. This book will inspire your kids. Lots of great poems, poetry terminology, and exercises for students to try their hand at seeing how a poet sees, and playing with words to create their own poetry. I don't think I would buy this book for children younger than 12, but it would be great for high school. We will not finish this book. For the age group I am working with, the later chapters are a little heady. We may come back to it later.

Absolutely Wonderful Poetry Study Book
I have never really been one to 'enjoy' poetry. I have one favorite (Love Sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning) and can make a poem rhyme but I never understood the feeling and passion that goes into poetry. This book is one that I am going to be going through with my daughter for her 9th grade year but I read it myself to check the content. Here is what can be expected from this book:Sight Training, Beauty of Words (Real Toads), Metaphors, Paradox, Irony, Symbolism, Musical Thought, Rhythm, Sonnets, Haikus, Syllabic Verse, Stanzas (Couplet, Quatrain, Tercet (Triplet), Rime Royal, Spenserian, Parallelism (Synonymous, Antithetic, Synthetic), Villanelle, Sestina, Pantoum), Genres (Lyric, Narrative, Epic, Ballad, Elegy, Dramatic Dialogue, Didactic), Matters of Voice, Writing, Reading and Revising, Select PoemsThis book has no pictures and if it did I would almost say that it'd be a bad thing; it would ruin the image you create on your own through poetry. Each chapter has at least one Stepping Stone exercise to do that deals with the subject of the chapter. For instance in chapter 1, Sight Training, the activity is to describe fruit with words that convey more than just an image but feelings and 'meanings'.A book that will engage your student (or yourself) in the action of reading and writing poetry. This book is also from a Christian perspective which I find to be refreshing. The selected poets/poetry are ones that many are familiar with but there may be some that are not so familiar, which is also good.

Great for Christian Students, Also Good for Adults
I used this when I taught Creative Writing for a few years in a private school. It was exactly what I needed for the poetry coarse. Although the coarse was an elective, the student still were not looking forward to the poetry section. Once we were finished they liked poetry much more, and I know it's partly because of this book. The books starts where they are, takes it slow (without being too slow), and helps them integrate their interests and surroundings into their own poetry. If you are looking for a homeschool book for a blossoming writing I can't recommend this one enough.

Excellent guide for me as a parent as I teach ...
Excellent guide for me as a parent as I teach my junior high and high school children. It teaches the fundamentals and gives creative prompts for poetry lessons in writing.

I highly recommend this book
This book helped me look at poetry first as a way of seeing and then as a way of writing. This influenced my poetry writing for years after. I highly recommend this book.
