Q: Can I string only 4 lights together?

The unit comes with 6 lights that are strung together as a non-detachable unit, with about 10 feet of cord between each light. Using the app, you can control all 6 lights at once (same color/brightness), or have each light display a different color/brightness. Through the app, you can also link several different units together into groups, and control them all together. (I have only one unit so I haven't tried this, but the instructions are in the manual.) One thing to point out: the lights will only connect to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network, NOT a 5 GHz network. Usually it's easiest to create a "guest" account on your exiting network and designate it as 2.4, then connect the lights to that. This 2.4 GHz requirement is mentioned in the manual, but I glanced over it the first time I read it and got very frustrated until I realized why I was having so much trouble. Once it connected to 2.4, everything worked perfectly.
