Released from prison, Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) takes a job as bodyguard to the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). When his new employer is revealed to be one of the Old Gods-ancient deities whose power and influence are dwindling-Moon becomes caught up in their struggle with the New Gods, who are based on modern concepts such as technology, the media, and globalization. Based on Neil Gaiman's novel, this fantasy series debuted on Starz in 2017. Emily Browning, Crispin Glover, Bruce Langley co-star. 8 episodes on 3 discs. 7 1/2 hrs. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English DTS HD 5.1 Master Audio; Subtitles: English (SDH), Spanish. Review: Gods do I love this - Fair warning for fans of the book, many liberties are taken with the source material for this adaptation for pacing purposes, BUT this was all done by the author himself, so it works out. I can't properly review this show without providing major spoilers, but suffice it to say, its a tale of a man caught up in a war of old gods vs new, and how his perception of the world comes crashing down and reshaped in the face of impossibility. Casting in this is hit and miss, but as a hardcore fan of the books, who I imagine playing the main characters is very specific and likely would never have happened (one character I can only envision seen being played by Scatman Crothers, RIP). Despite this, Showtime stepped up their A-game casting team, and though I may not agree with some choices, every actor is fantastic in their role and is captivating. Sadly this first season is short, and it ends at a rather strange point in the story, nowhere where I thought they would compared to the book, but since its been said they plan at least 2 more seasons that explores previously unpublished material by Neil Gaimen, its worth the wait I'm sure. All in all, check this out. Its a fantastic series based on a seminal work. Give it a watch. Review: Love this show - Love this show. Good price

I absolutely love this show
I really enjoyed Fuller's vision of American Gods. Not everyone will, as it deviated from Gaiman's book. As it's own story, the characters are wonderful and feel confidently themselves, the special effects are striking and convincing, the soundtrack is completely on point, and the pacing flows pretty well for condensing such a rich book down. I loved the dialog in particular; if you are familiar with the book you can immediately see the layers of what is being spoken about or referenced, but if you haven't then nothing is lost or given away. I wish that there would be a second season by the original team present for the first

Those Who Believe Everything
A truly gifted rendering of ancient gods, whose people also continue to worship them in the USA. It offers an understanding of how people can create idol gods by habitually bowing their heads to the mobile phone idol / any device with a glowing screen. The problem always arises when people try to replace gods who can reach out and touch with devices that stop working during angry weather, lost signal, or missed payment. Hence, the wakeup call -"If you don't believe, you had better ask somebody".

Episode 8 is different than what is listed.
It is all enjoyable but there seems to be a different episode 8 on the blu-ray instead of the Come to Jesus episode it starts with Mr Nancy (?)playing a record and starts writing the story of Essie McGowan and Mad Sweeney. Wondering why it is different.

Outstanding show and blu ray
I am a huge fan of Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal TV series and I am happy to see much of that talented creative team reunite to start an adaptation of the brilliant Neil Gaiman novel. I was not disappointed; this show is beautifully photographed, scored and acted and the story is both weird and wonderful. The Blu-ray itself is lovely and the extras are fantastic, although I do wish every episode had a commentary track. I am looking forward to season 2 of American Gods and, hopefully, season 4 of Hannibal!

Season One Is Great
I saw this on cable tv and I had to have it for my DVD collection. I've never seen anything like it. I've seen it several times. If you haven't seen it and can find it to stream, it's worth the watch in my opinion. Season 2??? Not so good.

I loved this. Super plot and characters, thanks to Mr Gaiman. Dark to very dark atmosphere (which lifts in the last 2 episodes). The scene with Mrs Moon (DeadWife) and the lynch mob looked straight out of Sin City (which is a GOOD thing). Ian McShane great in his role - enigmatic and cranky, with a great presence. Excellent casting throughout. Gillian Anderson in her strangely under-publicised multiple role, I didn't even recognise her as Lucy and as Bowie (it's called Acting, darling), and as Marilyn, where her performance ticked boxes where I didn't even know I had boxes.. It's a long time since I read the book, so this has been a great watch for me, not comparing it with the book, and enjoying anew all the bits I'd forgotten about. Roll on season two - the book is ALL worth putting on screen, however many seasons that may run to, the more the merrier (merry in a dark, Gothic bloody kind of a sense).

The American Gods Season 1 is probably better than anything I've seen in a long time. I am a big literature, TV and movie fan. I rate TAG S1 as high or higher than any season of Games of Thrones which I also love. Neil Gaiman is the executive director or something like that for the TV series. The show is not available on regular TV. Not surprising on account that it could easily offend the feelings of someone deeply religious or people who are more sensitive than your humble servant. Or should I say more sensible? Basically the plot revolves around the war between the old religious and mythological gods who immigrated to USA, and the new American ones having to do with media, power, money, technology and so on. It’s a mix of magnificent and disgusting, divine and profane, lofty and low, it's very exciting, violence abounds, sex is there including pretty explicit homosexual act etc. In fact the author, the producers, actors and perhaps viewers would have been jailed for it say 60 years ago.

Muy buena serie, pocos capitulos pero con muy buen contenido, entrega en tiempo y funciona todo correctamente. Recomendada a quienes les guste series dramaticas. Basada en el libro de Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman has been one of my favourite writers since I first came across it by accident. It's darkly comedic, with a mystery at the centre of it that takes some time to open up. Shadow Moon is released from prison with some bad news. He needs to get back home and comes across Mr Wednesday on a plane. The world building is gradual, it's too slow at times but it's worth hanging in there for the reveals that come along. I'm lucky I read the book, I watched the series with friends who hadn't and I needed to explain some of the elements to them. The visual appeal and the buckets of blood are appealing but it's the premise of the old gods, brought to America by the beliefs of the incomers versus the new gods, the elements of modern life that people are turning to worship. It gets where it's going, but you're going to get lost along the way.
