Still an enjoyable Black & White film
For me Basil Rathbone will always be the only Sherlock Holmes. He was the one I grew up watching on Sunday afternoons with my dad on TV and even without that, he always feels like he embodies the English detective. In going to Washington Holmes and Watson are on the case when - during WWII - they are needed to find a man who is missing and the documents he was carrying. With a train car filled with possible bad guys - and girls - Holmes and Watson - the one and only Nigel Bruce as the one and only Watson also for me - are soon in the capitol city providing their help to a grateful local police. I always love the ways they set up clues for Holmes - and things you’re supposed to get/see (or not) and come away trying to figure things out with Holmes. But overall, this Black & White is from a time when movie making was almost factory-like, yet they could make such interesting and entertaining stuff. I’m always in awe of the simple and meaningful, and enjoyable ways of this golden era of film. Once again Holmes gets the man, the documents, and saves the day. And in the end - as all good propaganda films do - he drives through Washington DC, past the memorials, past the capital, and extols the virtues of an important friendship and commonality between the US and England at a time when the world was on fire. Great entertainment here.

A classic
This movie was a quicker story line. It seemed almost rushed at points. but it did keep you on your toes and I believe, added a touch of humour.

Awesome movie
Going to tell you the same thing for every Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce "Sherlock Holmes" movie I purchased! They're all GREAT! I've been a fan of these movies and those actors since I was a child and that's been a whole lot of years! I now own every one they ever made with those two actors. Not interested in the others. Going to London on vacation next year and even plan to stop by and visit the "Sherlock Holmes Museum" there on--you guessed it--21 B Baker Street! :-D

Historically important
This was one of the films of the WW11 era, and it is historically a gem to see, coming out at a time when Americans were respected. Those who find that Basil Rathbone was the only Sherlock Holmes worth watching will enjoy his performance here. It is fun to trace the clues that lead him to the interesting conclusion. This one and the "Voice of Terror" are good for viewing together.

Great Fun
A very campy telling of a Sherlock based story. All the classic tropes of the Canon are present. A WWII propaganda movie that was a hoot to watch today. Helps to know the "real" Sherlock Holmes stories.

Holmes in th US
This is the MFI 2003 DVD which is a very basic presentation of the film with the only extra being the english subtitles. The picture is very sharp and the audio clear, its a very good restauration job. One of the better Holmes stories which has the entire audiance following the fortunes of a set of matches!
