PlayShire

After reviewing MANY different building style toys, I opted for PlayShire Brain Flakes. For some quick background information, I run a very busy elementary school library. On days that students are checking out their books they often need a side activity while waiting their turn to browse. There are so many activities, but many schools, like ours, are currently encouraging STEM sidebars. LEGOs, I love them, but they are so loud! The same for Magnoforms and many others. Brainflakes are just as fun- more so, in my opinion, and have the added benefit of being quiet. They haven't made it to the school yet though because the adults are still building with them. What really sold me on this company over the others was the offer of more plans. Some like to let their imaginations run wild and others like to build according to plans. Thanks PlayShire for a great product. This may be the second product review I've ever written, but I really thought they were worth it!

These brain flakes are very good and creative. It needs some power to put them together, so it isn’t for small kids. Also I like that ready construction is very sturdy - you can move it and it will not crunch. I have only one complain - and that is I put 4 stars: color variety of flakes is weird. The most beautiful colors like pink or purple are not a lot, but black-blue are 3 times more.

I bought Brain Flakes for my precocious 4-year-old great-granddaughter(I know, every Grandma thinks that) and put them without comment on a favorite table in her play room at my house. On her first visit she asked what they were and all I said was she could “make things” with them. She did nothing. so I made a simple item before her next visit. As she left, she surprised me with a very elaborate sculpture she had made. The flakes have since become prized possessions!!

I received them today and first I washed 300 of them.(half of the box) After I dry them I realized there was something sticky on my hand. I saw black, oily things on flakes. I already washed them with soap and water so what is this dirty thing???? I do not know but I just put them in the trash!Some of the flakes have sharp edges and it is not safe to play for little kids. 58 flakes are in the trash can right now it is because they are dirty and not safe. There are 600 flakes in the box and you will probably put 120 flakes in the trash.Idea is good but it is not worth to buy!!!

My 3-year-old loves building things. These flakes are a wonderful medium for him to express his creativity. I took off one star for two reasons: 1) some of the flakes were defective and had to be thrown away. On the defective flakes, one or more of the prongs were not fully formed or not formed at all. This made them frustrating for my son to use. 2) The colors of flakes are no where near evenly distributed. We received very few pink, purple, yellow, red, and white, but a TON of black, brown, and green. I wish that the colors were more evenly distributed. All in all, I am happy with this purchase, as my son loves them!

We are so pleased that we bought this toy for our children!Pros:1. My kids return to play with this toy just about every day.2. My kids use their imaginations when they play with this toy.3. My kids use teamwork and develop ideas as a group when they play with this toy.4. This toy is easy to pick up.5. This toy makes no obnoxious noises.6. When I happen to walk across this toy scattered about the living room floor in the middle of the night, there are no sharp pieces to pierce my feet.7. All of my children enjoy playing with this toy. The baby is 16 months and she likes to put the pieces into the tub and dump them out over and over again. The 4 year old organizes the pieces by color when alone and can build simple structures on her own. The 5 year old gets really creative making things that she can use in other types of play. For instance, she will make a house for her teddy bear and then role play with the teddy bear. She pretends he is going to school and coming home to the house she built for him. My husband also enjoys ‘helping’ the girls play with this one.8. This toy comes in a great storage tub.9. This toy is waterproof. I don’t care if the girls take it into the bathtub.

I bought 10 of these for my younger nieces and nephews for Christmas. I like the idea that they have instructions on how to build things that are included in the kit to get them started plus they can be creative and use their own imagination to build things! Thanks for a great product!

These are fine. They are what they are. Most snap together and come apart easily. I’m sure there are more versatile Montessori style building toys, but these are definitely one of the better ones especially at this price point. You’ll need to buy multiple sets to make the amazing things you see in the main picture, however there are enough flakes to build some really cool things and get your flakes, err I mean foot in the water.
