it says they are 3 inches wide, but one comment says they are 2" wide?

3" wide, including the plastic lip of the containers, 2 3/4" interior width. I measured it for you. Pass the kindness along :-)

Has anyone used this for their fridge?

Yes I use mine in the fridge to hold eggs and others to hold small items that get shoved in the back. I really love these containers
