Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools: An Invitation to the Wonder and Mystery of Prayer

Refreshing book on praying.
I enjoyed this book. There are many things in this that, although I already knew it was still great to be reminded of them. God enjoys our fellowship and prayer and a holy life is a part of that. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a deeper prayer life. The one and only thing I didn't agree with in this book is the talk of a trinity. While that is a common misconception of the Godhead, it is not truth. God is one. Jesus was God manifest in the flesh. There is not a "council" of god's in Heaven. God is only one but can operate in different ways. Other than that, the book was amazing.

Surprised!
I read this book with a friend for her class. I wasn’t expecting much, to be honest—another emotionally driven book that would be weak on Scripture and strong on feeling. But man, was I wrong.Suffice it to say, this book is a must-read for anyone who prays or wants to pray! And it’s tied to Scripture (as it should be).*What I loved most was how raw, honest, and practical it is. It doesn’t just inspire you to pray—it reshapes the way you think about prayer. The author weaves together biblical truth, historical wisdom, and personal stories in a way that is both challenging and refreshing. Whether you're new to prayer or have been praying for years, this book will deepen your understanding and practice.

Love is something we choose to do
Ironically, one of the phrases I highlighted in this book was this: "Prayer is not about memorizing of facts or highlighting of key phrases, it's a relational discovery."The message of the book is consistent with a saying of Confucius: "What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand. This book is all about doing. Love is not a disease that we catch; love is a verb; love is something we chose to do. And, this is a how-to book for praying with the goal of a loving relationship with God. One of its strengths is that it is written for real people, with all of our real strengths and real weaknesses. It is not just for some elite group of spiritual beings. From a spiritual standpoint it is great. But, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the writing. The chapters seemed disjointed, like they were each their own book, and not part of the larger whole. On an intellectual plane, some of the chapters even contradicted others. For example the chapter that elevated "middle-way to pray" to the highest form of prayer contradicted the chapter just before that was about active prayer. At first, I thought maybe it was like a Zen koan, but in the end I don't think so. I think the reality is this: active, passive, "middle," thankful and other forms of prayer are all valid as long as they are done with a loving motive. Love of God is infinite, but its manifestations in the real world are situationally dependent. But, this weakness should not stop anyone from reading this book.

Incredible!
I had this book on my wish list for ages, but for some reason just never purchased it. Fast forward and I heard Tyler on a podcast and was left in complete awe. I was absolutely enamored with the way he described prayer and the dynamic of that aspect of relationship with God, so I immediately bought the book. The process that Tyler lays out throughout his book is so inspiring and he writes in such a way that makes it feel as though it's very easily attainable. This is such a rich and valuable resource, one that I know I will circle back to in the future. I am truly changed because of this book, and I think you will be, too!My only complaint is that I couldn't find a highlighter that didn't bleed through the pages, and I did A LOT of highlighting (lol!). Otherwise it's perfect.

Best book on Prayer and presence I’ve ever read.
This book is a companion book that I will probably read another four times referring back to the timeless wisdom of God within it.
