Fascinating desk decoration. A modern version of a lava lamp, but interactive. I love them!
I bought one of each of the wood colored and the gray colored Ferrofluid Music Mate. There is a lot to love about these little magic dancing boxes. Both of them look great and the overall workmanship is really good. I bought them as gifts for my two teenage boys, and they both really loved them. For those looking to buy one, I will outline the things that I really enjoyed about it, and some minor things to be aware of. I really liked that it is not a speaker. (I have plenty of those) It has a very sensitive microphone that controls the action of the ferrofluid. Even talking in the same room will create motion in the fluid. The louder and more consistent sound will keep it in the center. When it is quiet, the ferro fluid often drops out of the center. This is fine and adds to the motion. The back of the round glass is white and lights up when the unit is on. It is reasonably bright and really accents the ferrofluid. I thought the jewel in the corner would light up, but it does not. There is a really bright blue led on the back to indicate power, but it can be covered if needed. As a bonus, it comes with a really strong small magnet attached to a holder that looks like a chess pawn. It is really fun to move the fluid around and interact with it. One unit's magnet was actually two smaller magnets and could be split apart. This might not be great for little kids, but I don't have that worry. I don't remember if this was common to both units. The magnets work regardless if the unit is powered on not. When you get it, it is normal to have some extra non-ferrofluid oil in the unit (looks like a floating light brown bubble). Both mine had this. If you set the unit on it's side the oil will be prominently displayed at the top edge of the glass, which doesn't look great. If you place the unit vertically as shown in the pictures here, there is a small indent behind the edge of the wood that traps and hides that oil. My older son had wanted it to sit under the monitor, but it really needs to be in the normal vertical orientation to look right. My kids leave them plugged in, but they do have a battery so they will run on their own. I have not tested this much, but they ran for at least a few hours on Christmas before we plugged them in. If you are looking for an awesome desk gadget, a replacement for your lava lamp that is long gone, or a really neat toy that is brimming with science, this is a perfect gift for you.

Very cool desk toy and conversation starter
This thing is super fun. I keep it on my desk and talk to it to make it dance when I’m bored. I let it charge overnight and then during the workday it runs on battery all day no problem (~9 hours generally). I turn it away a lot so that people who come into my office are greeted by it and it’s been a big hit. People love it and it’s even diffused some stressful situations. Great conversation starter. The ferrofluid itself is very reactive to the magnets and when it really gets going, it likes to split apart into smaller forms and then reform later. It’s a ton of fun to watch. One caveat to all of this: the first one I ordered had a manufacturing defect (dark line across the width of the white backing circle) and suboptimal ferrofluid reactivity. I exchanged it and the replacement was perfect, so no harm no foul.

Maybe I just had bad luck
Look, this thing IS cool when you get one that isn’t damaged. The first one I did replace because it came with an internal stain in the glass that wasn’t too hard to spot with the eye and came up clear as day on camera. I’m trying to use this personally as background visual overlay for short clips showcasing new music. I did still test the first unit and it was fantastic, just that blemish. The second unit comes and the box gets taken inside within an hour. I’ve seen others talk about, as well as the product description, keeping it out of heat. Well it was taken inside and left in the hallway for a day before I opened it. Some of the terrafluid had melted onto the glass. Can’t be moved with the magnet, it’s done. Unfortunately I don’t get a second replacement option so I will try to buy the item one last time and may update my review if I’m able to avoid similar circumstances. EDIT: The customer service from the seller has been fantastic. For that alone, I am changing my review to 5 stars. I’ve attached two pictures; one depicting the melted fluid and the second showing a replacement unit I was provided free of charge with a small interior bubble defect. The seller clarified that these are hand blown glass fabrications so defects happen. It DOES NOT IMPAIR THE DEVICE IN ANY WAY. It is purely cosmetic and because this will be on camera I just don’t want it to have the mark. It works beautifully and I’ve already gotten so many compliments from family and coworkers. They were kind enough to give me a discount due to the issue as well. Stellar service.

defective
A friend of mine has one of these, I loved it, ordered one. Whereas my friend's is older than mine, it's in great shape. Mine has all sorts of issues with the Ferrofluid. It's left stains on the front window, and bits of it are clinging to the back of the window and the sides. It's a total mess. I just sent the company a message about this, and am hoping they'll replace it, as it's too ugly to display anywhere right now.

Artistic and cool!
Ferrofluid for the win! This awesome invention intrigues all of my friends. The ferrofluid dances to sound and music with a nice indiglo background. The only thing that would make this better would be if it connected via Bluetooth. Instead it uses a traditional microphone to pick up sound to make the fluid dance like an EQ would. Totally rad though! Great centerpiece to a party or having company over!

Fun and Beautiful
It's a weighty build that feels high quality and looks like a work of art. Battery life is good. The ferrofluid motion isn't always as impressive as the best videos show, but it works well. The biggest disappointment I have is tied to one of its strengths: it has excellent gain control, able to adjust to very quiet or very loud music, but this means that when the bass drops or the chorus hits or whatever epic musical moment you are watching for arrives, it adapts instantly and does not react as dramatically as the moment demands. 😢😉

yeah, this thing is terrific
This was a speculative purchase for me. Kind of expensive, not sure if it would look good or really work. Turns out the whole family loves it. The video shows how it works — music is playing in the room (not from the device) and the ferrofluid dances around. Backlighting makes it work and stand out. It looks like an AI animation but it’s a physical, real-world effect. I was also worried that it would look/feel like a cheap thing but it’s nicely solid and dense and feels like it’s quality-made in your hand. Charging is easy with a USB C port. One caveat — don’t leave the magnet permanently attached to the glass … it will magnetize the ferrofluid, or at least that’s what I think happened to me. Great purchase, would buy again and will probably gift come winter.

Absolutely awesome!
Totally random purchase. I was a little worried cause most reviews were good but a few had particularly bad experiences (seems like factory issues and product defects), including the glass breaking and oil/ferrofluid spilling onto their desks. But, I’m glad I splurged for it. Playing with the magnet manually is a lot of fun, did that right out of the box, though I’m a little concerned banging the metal magnet on the glass a lot might not be great haha (probably can put some cloth or rubber at the end of the magnet cause it’s strong enough still). But, when you get it plugged in and turned on, the backlight is BRIGHT, and staring it react to music is a lot of fun. I had sort of imagined it like those videos where people put sand or fluid on speakers and it makes very cool, perfectly parallel shapes. It won’t make and hold specific geometric shapes with music, it’s sort of like lava lamp but fast moving (globules bounce up and down, breaking apart and coming together), though in that random bouncing you do get moments where those signature Ferrofluid sharp spikey arms pop out. Behaved differently than expected but, I find it equally awesome and mesmerizing. The wood is nice looking too. Mine did have a TINY air bubble you can see when it is rotated but when it sits on a desk as intended, that bubble disappears into a tiny little gap at the very top of the circle and seems to cause no issues.

Lives up to expectations.
It tottally lives up to the expectations, has a powerful sensor that makes the bubble dance to anything, even normal human conversations and sounds. It's a great accessory to your desk or in a living room next to the sound system.
