Topographic Recreational Map of New Mexico: Detailed Travel Map

A Great Map With A Myriad Of Useful Information
The GTR Mapping "Topographic Recreational Map of New Mexico" is an incredibly useful map with loads of features. It is quite legible, is good for both trip planning and navigation, and has loads of useful data either embedded in the map itself (e.g. color shaded topography, Interstates, exit numbers, etc.) or in tabulated data panels (e.g. state fish and game areas, boating and rafting information, mining districts and mine information, ski areas, climate information, etc.) The map is easy to read and the symbology is generally intuitive to use while any questions are quickly answered by the excellent legend. This is a great map for getting around New Mexico, and there are few faults to find with it. Points that could be improved are minimal. More local road details would be great (and seemingly possible in this scale,) and the climate data table only displays information for January and July, which leaves a lot open to interpolation and guessing, especially at higher elevations. Overall, though, this is a great and very current map which was most recently revised in 2010. I highly recommend it for anyone traveling in New Mexico, though depending on where you go you may also need more detailed local maps as well.

Basic Road Map for Seeing New Mexico on Improved, Paved, Roads
Not a topographic map - but more than adequate for leaving the Interstate and to tour New Mexico's two lane roads by car.Personally, I more of car camper than a back packer. The map shows most of the through roads between towns, to include the larger campgrounds. Keep in mind that in New Mexico that once you trek away from the Interstate Highway - McDonald's restaurants and Safeway supermarkets are few and far between. The map lacks the detail of the larger, more comprehensive Benchmark Maps - New Mexico Road & Recreation Atlas - which contains sixty plus, large pages of maps just for NM. So, don't expect to see many of the remote County, Forest Service and Reservation roads that show the more primitive campsites - many of which are unimproved roads that will destroy a modern front wheel drive car. This is a must have map to accompany those travel books that lure you off the beaten to tour hidden NM. Unlike the more comprehensive book mentioned above, this map folds to fit neatly in a glove box or center consul with room to spare.

Nice map, though topography could be clearer
Nice full-page view of the state, with lots of detail. The back includes several indexes. Scale is 1 inch =12.5 miles. One issue is that there are two different color schemes - one for topography and one for land regions - where they overlap the colors are merged - eg yellow topography + blue national forest = green, which makes it harder to get a sense of the topography. Plus blue usually means water... So it might be nicer to just see the topography colored and have dashed lines for the regions. It includes faint gray contour lines every 1000 feet, but no 3d shading.

Good little map
These maps are the best you will find if you want something handy and small enough to fit in a backpack, tackle box or glove box. If you don't care about size and are just looking for the best map out there then I recommend the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer, but just make sure to get the most up-to-date release when you get it. I've noticed most here on Amazon aren't, but if go to DeLorme's website you will be sure to get the latest for just a few dollars more than an older one is here.

Good map series for my purposes
There are lots of maps out there, and my trips out west are generally fast-paced (from photo op to photo op) involving a lot of driving from place to place, and I had three maps with me the last time. This was the one I used the most often in the car, so I will purchase maps from this series in the future.

Local Gas Stations Have Better Maps ... For Less
Notice even the 5-star reviews have many valid complaints. Why so generous? This map is no better than what a sixth-grader could compile. I grade this effort a C-. Colors are a mess, the topographical aspect is poorly executed, and it just feels rushed. Save your money, your local gas station has better, more current offerings.

Great map
Best map I've found -- finally know the name of those mountains directly west of me -- no other map gave that info and even an entire book about NM mountains did not solve the mystery. Finally found this inexpensive map which solves the mystery for me -- as well as many other geographic questions.
