Peter Gabriel 4: Security Remastered

BUYER BEWARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Make sure that what you are buying is the remastered version. I recently ordered this disc and was sent the original recording. There's three things to note here : 1) This album was originally recorded digitally, and some versions have a yellow label that says "Digitally Recorded" : This does NOT mean that it was digitally remastered, herein lies the mistake of "misrepresentation" by sellers (amazon and otherwise) 2) This album in its remastered form is quite different and FAR superior to the original. Many of the cool sounds and effects are fully realized on the remastered version. (so many remastered discs seem to be an excuse to repackage an item - they will just overcompress the data to make it louder (but not necessarily better)) , but in the case of PG's Security the remastering does justice to an arguable classic. 3) Because the item is currently listed as "discontinued by manufacturer" we're talking alot of money to order one. I kinda feel ripped off because I ordered a disc I already own !! So maybe try contacting the seller first to double check before laying out 20 bucks for a used disc. If you can find the remastered one, good for you, I'm jealous.

Peter Gabriel's best
I was pretty young when this album came out. I remember listening to it when my mom would play it. Maybe she didn't realize it, but this album made an impression on me then, and I still listen to it today on a fairly regular rotation.I actually have both the original mastering and the remastered. If there are any changes, they are quite subtle. I must admit that that I have not listened to either side by side in a while too.I am sure that most people have heard "Shock the Monkey", and while I may liked this song at one time, I actually find it the most boring when compared to the other songs. For example, take the opening to San Jacinto. It starts off with a seemingly random, almost percussive (think xylophone) keyboard part. Peter then begins to sing gently over this riff while the music builds in tension throughout. Classic. Then take the song Wallflower. To me, this is the star of the album. This is a song of resistance in the face of oppression. The lyrics are wonderful and is a very touching song. Easily one of Peter's best. Then the album ends with the booty shaker "Kiss of Life". I always feel like dancing when I hear this song...The rest of the album is just as solid as these songs that I mentioned in particular. One thing that I have seemed to notice about this album is that it has seemed to age really well. There is some music that certainly sounds like it came out in the early eighties. This album was released then, but it could just as well have been written today and still have meaning.

Remaster is an improvement overall
Given the current high prices for the SACD version, I decided to give the remastered CD version a try until I can find the SACD at a price I'm willing to pay (I own the original CD release). The remastered CD is an improvement in clarity and detail over the original version. My only complaint is that the very end of the last track the last beat has been softened on the remaster. The last beat on the original is a bit more punctuated, sounds more appropriate to the song, and is more satisfying. The last beat on the remaster just seems to die.Given the fairly low price of the remastered CD, I consider it a worthwhile upgrade to the original CD release (I'll be keeping both, however).

Can an album be so perfect? I guess it can...
1982 is the year... The year 'Security', Peter Gabriel's fourth solo album was released. While I listen to my newly purchased limited edition copy that just came in today, I think of the things that were special about it back then... It was a pioneer in the use of digital recording techniques and sampling, at a time, when synthesizers were far from being a commonplace technology. The splash cymbals, that almost all drum accompaniments have us used to are, simply... not there... PG prohibited their use by drummer Jerry Marotta, which translated into a richer use of the possibilities that this instrument has. Participation of ethnic musicians (Ekome Dance Company), something which Gabriel started to do more and more in the following two decades.I could go on, and on, but most important about this album is that, today, twenty years after its release, it still has as much life (if not more) than back then, which translates in the fact that the poll that petergabriel.com put up for fans to vote on the track listing for his new UP Tour, 6 of the eight tracks from 'Security' made it to the top 10.If you have never heard "old" Peter Gabriel, this album has to be in your collection. If you have and own this album -my case- get this beautifully packaged limited edition, which comes filled with pictures of the period and remastered versions of all songs. You will be gladly surprised to rediscover "Wallflower", one of Peter's most beautiful musical creations.

Peter is simply the best!
I needed to hear this album again in my car! After all these years, my old one disintegrated. Try his Plays Live album as well. It is great! A fair price and quick, careful shipping!

A sonic and artistic milestone
This was the first CD I ever bought a long, long time ago, before I even owned something I could play it on. To give you an idea of how long ago, CD players were just coming down to the $500 level. Even today it is one of few rock albums utilizing digital recording and mastering techniques throughout, giving the a songs sonic presence and range that is breathtaking. If you think you've put together an outstanding audio system, this disc will give it a thorough workout. Gabriel's music which has always been innovative comes of age in this recording. His blends of third-world rhythms and personal themes are stronger than ever, but the pieces enjoy a more polished presentation than previous releases, and the result is a new clarity that enables a wider audience to appreciate them.

`4', also known as `Security' is one of those albums that has stood the test of time and still seems to sound relevant and inspiring all these years later. We always knew Gabriel could write some amazing songs, but this albums seems to have a certain depth and darker edge compared to his previous outings. `San Jacinto' is a wonderful story song and I never get tired of listening to it and `I Have The Touch' is one of those songs that slips under the radar at first listen, but that seems to grow within you until it becomes one of your favourites on the album, if not of his back catalogue entirely. `Shock the Monkey' is one of the better known tracks from this album and it definitely has a more upbeat feel and is the most accessible at first take. This is the album that moved Gabriel firmly away from the sound of his previous solo albums and more toward the world influences that coloured his work from here on and it shows an artist in flux and someone who dares to follow what their heart dictates rather than what the music industry commands. It is all the more powerful for it and makes for essential Gabriel listening.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

Interesting album
Yet another album from a great singer/songwriter who came to fame through his group Genesis then left to form a few solo albums and created his own studio and helped a number of people including Kate Bush get started

Great album, brilliant vocalist & musician
Great album, brilliant vocalist & musician. I had problems with original purchase back in 1982, returning various faulty vinyl and tape copies of album. It's so easy to look back fondly at vinyl records- which now cost more than cds, but this album on cd sounds far better than I remember it sounding in pre-cd days, doing more justice to one of my favourite vocalists! This certainly takes me back to seeing PG and his band live on 'Playtime 88' tour of early 80's.

Peter Gabriel 4 by Peter Gabriel
This is the fourth album (also known as Security) by Peter and it doesn't disappoint in any way. The backing band is still class featuring Tony Levin, Jerry Marotta, Larry Fast and David Rhodes with backing vocals on 3 tracks by the great Peter Hammill. Tracks include The Rhythm Of The Heat, I Have The Touch and Shock The Monkey. Another belter from Peter Gabriel.
