Q: The plunger cap comes off every time I press it. What am I doing wrong?

When you say cap, if you mean the end you press with your thumb to load the sucker I would say you have a defective tool. That piece should not come off. If you mean the tip, the portion that makes contact with the solder to be removed, I'm assuming you are referring to one of the silicone tubes you place on the metal tip of the tool. Regardless of the claim, this small piece of tubing will become clogged with solder during use. If clogged it will pop off when you load the sucker for the next removal function. The silicone tube will need to be cleared of old solder to be used effectively.
