A heavy all-metal V8 engine with gorgeous realism
This kit is an elaborate scale model of a V8 Internal Combustion Engine with 32 valves, chain-driven overhead camshafts, and surprising mechanical fidelity. It will make any pistonhead or engineer salivate like my dog at dinner time. Once assembled, the engine is roughly the size of a large grapefruit and weighs a whopping 3 kg (7.5 pounds). This is not a Lego-style kit with minecraft-level pixelation. Instead, this looks and turns like a real ICE engine. Build Quality and Materials Everything is metal. Not “plastic painted to look like metal,” but actual anodized aluminum in multiple colors, with clean castings, no burrs, and no toy-like shortcuts anywhere. Real engines use plastic parts these days, but this display model doesn't. It’s metal all the way down. The ~50 major parts go together with hundreds of tiny screws. The screws come in more sizes than is reasonable, and they’re not always labeled clearly, but at least the kit includes plenty of extras. My box had no missing pieces. I ended up with a whole pile of leftover screws, presumably in case someone sneezes mid-assembly. Mechanical Accuracy This is where the kit earns its hefty price tag. It looks and behaves like the original. The eight pistons move realistically, the four camshafts operate the valves with proper springs and adjustable caps, and the chain-drive is not just decorative. Even components you can’t see once the block is closed are built with real mechanical function. The water pump even has a tiny internal turbine, which is a ridiculous amount of effort for a part no one will ever notice. I appreciated that. There are a few omissions: there is no carburetor or fuel injectors, no wiring harness, and no coolant circuit beyond that decorative pump. For a display model, the amount of working mechanism and realism is still impressive. Operation Once assembled, the engine runs via a small battery-powered electric motor from a small rechargeable battery. The movement is smooth, the pistons and valves dance properly, and watching the whole mechanism cycle is deeply satisfying. Sadly, the little electric motor itself is loud and has an unpleasant sound. I wish it was possible to turn the crankshaft by hand. Building Experience Expect 4 hours of assembly if you have some Modeling or engineering background. For novices this would be quite difficult to build successfully. The manual contains only terse sentences and drawings. You’ll spend a decent chunk of time puzzling over and deciphering which screws go where. The parts fit together beautifully, almost perfectly. I hit only one genuine design flaw: the overhead camshafts wouldn’t rotate freely because the travel of certain valves interfered with the motion. After disassembling the top end a few times, I eventually spotted the bushings restricted travel. Once I removed all 32 of them, everything ran smoothly. Mildly annoying, but solvable. The other modification I made was removing the oil pan to expose the gorgeous crankshaft underneath. It would be a pity to leave this detail hidden in the dark. Final Verdict This is likely the nicest Internal Combustion Engine display model you can buy. It’s extremely solid and heavy, mechanically faithful, gorgeous in metal, and endlessly satisfying to both build and watch. It’s also about 500 dollars, so it’s not an impulse buy, nor is it suitable for a kid. The instruction manual misses a great educational opportunity by explaining nothing about the engine's function. For anyone who loves engines or is interested in the intricate operation of machines, this display model kit is a miniature mechanical treat.

Excellent teaching model
I teach a small-engine class in high school where we disassemble and put back together a lawnmower engine while learning about the function and physics of the various parts. Upon completion of that task I was able to get donors to help purchase this for my students. I was impressed with the organization of the parts and the clarity of the directions. It is not complicated to put together but there are a lot of steps and a lot of parts. My students were able to do so with minimal input from me and they learned a lot while doing so. This is a very well-designed model and being able to see the action of the valves and pistons can lead to great learning experiences. We had fun putting it together and having it on display in my classroom has piqued the interest of my students from other classes as well. I was impressed with the quality and workmanship of the parts.

Nice
An amazing model to build. Solid and true to the operating characteristics of an 8 cyl engine. Had to wait a long time for the price to be reasonable. Ours was built in about 20 hours by a 13 year old who never lost sight of finishing the engine to make it operate in unison.

Doesn’t work
All put together and it doesn’t work! It’s engineered pretty well but for all the money I spent on this it should work. Checked and rechecked everything to make sure it was done correctly and it won’t run. Don’t waste your money.

Awesome detail! Great quality.
This is an amazingly accurate metal model of a V8 engine. The quality of the machining and fasteners is excellent. The directions are a little vague, but anyone who knows how a real V8 is put together will have no trouble. Also, there is an excellent video online. It is an excellent instructional tool.

Quality is great!
My 14yo is interested in car mechanics so we got this for him as a Christmas present. It took him a while to put together but he did it completely on his own. He's even taken parts off and put them back on afterwards. I think he's really proud of himself for being able to do this project. It's expensive but the product is great quality. Very happy with this purchase!

Costly for what it does
Lots of small parts. Instructions not clear. Hope you have a well lighted work space to put this together. It does not run on any fuel it has a battery that turns the motor so you can watch it

THE BEST MECHANICAL MODEL KIT
I received this purchase exactly on time. The packaging was outstanding. This is the second Teching product I purchased. The first was the Turbo fan CFM56 jet engine that turned out fantastic. It was a lot of hours, but extremely enjoyable to build. Teching instruction manuals are superb because you get a beautiful booklet with plenty of illustrations. Every part is numbered and packed in foam or plastic. You also receive spare screws and fasteners in case you loose some-like I did. I highly recommend this product.

Some of the screws strip out very easily so loctite would be a good suggestion. Plus the solder connections on the battery were weak and I had to resolder them.
