A sumptuous Rachmaninov collection built around the piano concertos – interpreted by Nikolai Lugansky (“Rachmaninov just doesn’t get any better than this,” declared the Guardian’s on hearing him in Concerto No. 2) – and the symphonies, performed by André Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra, a team celebrated in the Russian Romantic repertoire. Gramophone judged Previn’s advocacy of the Symphony No. 2 “among his most enduring contributions to our musical life”.

Lugansky is Excellent but Previn is too Slow
I have been listening to Rachmaninoffs music for over 50 years and Lugansky is superb in Rachmaninoffs solo piano music, but really needs a great Russian conductor like Giergev or Temirkanov in the Concertos in order to be fully inspired. As for the orchestral music Previn is too slow. Ashkenazy or Ormandy are excellent in the symphonic works, and are available on budget labels. Also bare in mind that Valentina Lisitsa is the only pianist that has ever used the composers recordings as a guideline to her interpretations of all 4 Concertos and the Rhapsody, all on a 2 CD set. (Lugansky's 3 CD set is also worth considering, however his 3rd Concerto is a bit tame where as Bronfman's DVD with the Berlin Philharmonic is a desert island must have. Watch him on youtube and see what I mean) Then there are the 2 superb CD's with Lugansky playing the 24 Preludes and the 17 Etudes Tableaux which evoke memories of Sviatoslav Richter. These are the recordings that I believe capture the full range of Rachmaninoffs creative genius to its absolute maximum level.

Excellence and mastery on all levels, for what? Only £13.99!
Omg. The quality, the sheer .russianness of Luganski’s playing and excellent accompaniment by the .CBSO and Sakari Oramo makes these concerti unsurpassed in my opinion. Forget Ashkenazy! I also love Yuja Wang’s no 2 and no 3 but she’s not Russian! And although her playing reaches vibrational heights unmatched by Lugansky, he is the solid interpretation for truthful Russian playing. The box is misleading as it implies Previn is the only conductor. Who cares when you hear such stunningly gorgeous renditions of these timeless performances?

True works of quality from a 40 year time span
Wonderful, 8 CDs of genius at a ridiculously bargain price, some might feel aggrieved thatbthese are old, old recordings but as interpretations of the works they really do stand the test of time. Well worth adding to a collection regardless of whatever current recordings one possesses

Nikolai will not disappoint!
I bought this box CD's because I love Rachmaninov, obviously, and this offered a huge amount of music at an amazingly good value price. It has not disappointed and I am delighted with my buy.

Try it!
I got this set for the Previn symphonies, for me they are the best. This new addition is a little too bright. The piano concertos are ok but I prefer Ashkenazy/Previn. I’m not keen on the cello sonata I prefer Yuli Turovsky/Luba Edlina on Chandos. Having said that, I think it is a great intro in to the music of this great composer.
