I love the sound!
This is the first time I've upgraded the mouthpiece for my sax. I've been playing for a few years in a volunteer symphony, and thought it was time to upgrade. I paired this with a carbon fiber reed and I was so happy. It sounded great (playing jazz at least), and it was an easy transition to the new mouthpiece. So far so good!

Tore after 2 months of use.
We purchased this on September 18th, 2024. 2 months in and it looks like this. Hopefully we do not have a problem with the warranty. I can't imagine having to replace every 2 months. My son is in band so he ususes it a bunch, but I don't think that is an excuse. If we get another one, it lasts longer, and it was just a defective, I will change my review.

Refreshing
Players seem somewhat mixed on SYOS mouthpieces, and I for sure have enough emails in my inbox…but I have to say not only has the Smoky become my go-to player, but one review that said they’d prefer it was hard rubber to printed plastic caught my interest. I would agree completely, we’re it not that I believe part of its exact acoustic quality is the resonance of the material. I think hard rubber may likely last longer in a year or three, but I love the way it sounds. Even the plastic ligature adds something beautiful and refreshing to the sound quality of this mouthpiece. I really like the way it plays!

Works for me. Great intonation!
After playing it a bit I found the size 6 fit my needs for concert band. I have Selmer and VD pieces for serious music but this one is more free blowing and allows me to project more to cut above the brass section when I need to. I use a VD V16 #2.5. Maybe the 5 would have a more "Desmond" sound? It is practical too because sun/heat damage is not an issue like HR pieces. The slightly rough texture seems to stain more easily however. I took 1 star off because it seems expensive for the effort used to make it. Hand finishing does not seem evident and I imagine it can be made by machine easily and repeatedly. Finally, I can't fathom how someone could crack it in half unless they walk into a wall or misuse it in some way.
