It all depends on how much ventilation you have in that particular spot but it went away rather slowly but after a couple of weeks you almost don’t notice it anymore

Thanks for your question. Upper shelves are not adjustable. However, cabinet with a door has an adjustable shelf. You can adjust its height to 6.4inch, 9inch, and 11.4 inch for your various needs.

Can it be assembled with the door on top and the open shelves below?

We considered trying that but the open shelf unit has a cut-out so that you can anchor it to the wall, the bottom unit with the door doesn't have that opening and we did not want to alter it. Also the decorative piece on the bottom would not attach to the open shelf unit. Hope this helps.

Are the cabinets separate pieces and could the height be cut down?

Our Cabinet comes with accessories and it needs to be assembeled. It is composed of upper shelves and a cabinet at the bottom, and these two parts cannot be separated. Height of the whole item is 60.5". Upper shelves are not adjustable. However, cabinet with a door has an adjustable shelf.
