OEM quality replacement shockI installed and found that my tailgate still seemed to drop too fast then after watching a couple YouTube videos I learned that the tail gate left side hinge has a rubber end piece that often breaks and will cause the tailgate to drop too fast. Ordered the left side hinge from dealer for $60 and the shock performed perfectly.

I have had it now for a couple of months and the tailgate performs like it was new thanks to this replacement strut. The tailgate now lowers slowly and it takes much less effort to close. There are many videos online that show how to replace the strut. The hardest part for me was removing the left side taillight to gain access to the strut mounts.

My old tailgate spring was busted after getting hit in the rear. I bought this as a replacement. It’s very nice! It has better dampening than the old one did. The old one was not new though so I can’t comment on how it compares to a new oem. But it opens slower and softer than ever before. I recommend it!Just over a month later and it’s already losing its strength. Return window is closed. I no longer recommend this.

I'd been debating replacing the assist strut on my tailgate for quite awhile. My truck is 12 years old and I just wasn't sure it was assisting as much as it used to. I bit the bullet and ordered it then stalled for awhile since the videos I'd watched on replacing it all showed having to remove the tailgate, which I just really did not want to do.It turns out it is completely unnecessary.If you lower the tailgate, remove the tail light, then pull all of the light bulb harnesses from their sockets, you have full open access to the strut. I closed the tailgate, removed the upper retaining clip, and popped the socket off - there was very little pressure pushing against it so it was super easy. I then opened the tailgate CAREFULLY since it's heavy, then removed the lower mount. Installation of the new one was the reverse of the removal. Pop the lower socket on, then close the tailgate, and pop the upper socket on. It did take a little muscle to compress the strut but I only needed to compress it less than an inch I think.It literally took less than ten minutes. It's 99 degrees outside and I didn't even break a sweat. The gate is SO MUCH EASIER to use now, I had no idea how bad it had gotten. Great part!

Surprised how easy this job is and forgot how nice it was to have the assist mechanism. Tailgate now opens slow and smooth, and closes with a nice gentle assist. Old one popped out with flat head screwdriver. New one popped on in its place. Taking the tail light out, R/R, reinstall tail light took 5 minutes.
