Opal is a naturally-occurring amorphous solid known for its flashes of fire color. An amorphous solid is a material that, unlike crystal, is not organised in a regular lattice pattern. This makes for some unusual interactions with light, and is explains the opal’s rainbow or colors. In the mid 1970’s chemists discovered the clear sphere structure of opal, and were able to copy it, which brings us the synthetic opal, often referred to as Gilson opal. The simulated silica opal gems offered in these stud earrings are created using silica & resin and offer the look of real expensive genuine opal. They glisten and sparkle with real flashes of fire.
