Best of 2004
I'm not very good at articulating why I like or don't like a particular piece of music, but I bought this CD because a.) I heard the song "How Come" being played on local radio and I really liked it, and b.) because it was recommended by one of my favorite music stores in Austin. So I went out and plucked down 10.99 not exactly sure what to expect. All I can say is it was money well spent. This is one of the few cds that grabbed me from the first moment I played it. Two months later I still play it on a regular basis. From the first song through the last there isn't a weak song to be found, but to me a couple of songs stand out including; Trouble, Hold You in my Arms, and Forever My Friend. There are some who might want to compare him to Bob Dylan when he was starting out, but only time will tell if he stands the test of greatness. But he is surely one of the best song writers of today.I'm not good at explaining why, but this is without question my favorite CD of 2004. And although it will never get the airplay it deserves, it is a cd that should be heard by all.Enjoy!

Dancing with the Devil-ROCKS!
I saw Ray on a special on T.V. As soon as I heard his voice...I knew I had to have that CD. I went online to amazon.com, where I order ALL my music from because you can usually find the best price. Found the one that had the songs that I really liked the most.Bought the CD..and I can play it on and on and not get tired of it. This is a man who sings from his "soul" and there is something quite "unique" about his voice. I don't know if you remember when Rod Stewart came onto the scene with his kinda "raspy" voice that was so "pleasing" to the ear.I think Ray has that same kind of raspiness...just a little more refined. Without hearing any of the other CD's...this has got to be my favorite. There is NO song I don't care for. Each...and every one Wonderful..with "TROUBLE" being my personal favorite.

Different and excellent
I’m new to Ray LaMontagne’s music and based on recommendations, I started with Trouble. It’s really really good.....all aspects of the music are terrific and he is a uniquely gifted artist.....I highly recommend this one.

Spiritual without being religious
I'm probably one of thousands to point out that this CD is simply great. There is not a "filler" song on this CD collection, and many of the songs are exceptional. Ray LaMontagne provides very folksy instrumentally driven music that is backed up with thought provoking lyrics. I listen to this CD quite often because I hear something new at each listening. HIs songs are very spiriital without being religious, and at the very least, incredibly thought provoking. This makes a great gift for someone that likes thoiught provoking music in the musical a mixture of artists like Neil Young, Nick Drake, Neil Halstead, and many others.

Captivating new artist
I bought this CD here on Amazon last week after seeing Ray on The Artist's Den on television and being so intrigued by his airy- raspy and yet other times very strong voice. Had never heard of him before, and did not leave the spot in front of the television once until the entire episode was over. His lyrics about life and love are so thought-provoking and the simple guitar strums and riffs are beautiful, combined. The majority of the CD ( like the live show) has several other instruments played by the accompanying band. Soft Electric guitar, ( Not rocker style) drums, violin, piano, etc.. Ray plays the harmonica and this can be heard in one or two songs as well.I would agree that his influences are VERY varied. Soulfoul, folk-ish, a little country, etc.. a nice mixture of sounds and styles. His music certainly could not be catagorized easily. I suppose it is soulful-folk. :)This CD contains just 10 songs, 8 of which are slow songs. Two songs are more upbeat, "jazzy"-ier songs. Two songs have apparent female back-up ( not duets). All are beautiful and thoughtfully written. While Ray's guitar playing is very "simple", he is a GREAT writer and sings from the soul, making the simplest tunes most captivating. It was a must-buy for me immediately after seeing him on TV last weekend, playing to a small live audience who were swaying and singing along, many in tears.Buy it with no expectation of a dance CD or a real "happy tunes" line-up, though it's awesome background music for any small chatty get-together. Also know that it is mostly romantic in nature. Nice for other things. No regrets, really. Wish the CD had more than ten songs and will look forward to a little more upbeat tunes from him, too. Can't wait to hear more.

I am giving my Mom this CD for Mother's Day
I know that sounds crazy, but is it? I just wanted to give my Mom something different to expand her horizons. She listens to Van Morrison and Train, and so I want her to try something new. Not saying the brilliance of Mr. LaMontagne is analogous to Train (sorry not trying to be a snob here), but it's not like I'm giving her Skrillex, either. I cannot wait to see how she likes it. Am I a bad daughter? Should I have just bought her some jewelry and wine? lol They say experiences make you happier than material things, so I hope her having this CD will give her a great experience. This music has so much soul to it, I'll write a follow-up review to see how she likes it if I can remember.
