Legendary filmmaker Ovidio G. Assonitis, whose Tentacles and Piranha II sought to cash in on the killer fish craze spawned by Jaws, first hit pay dirt in 1974 with Beyond the Door a gloriously bonkers riff on The Exorcist featuring Emmy Award-winning actress Juliet Mills and distinguished British actor Richard Johnson.Set against the backdrop of San Francisco, Beyond the Door stars Mills as Jessica Barrett, a young mother who starts to develop strange behaviors whilst pregnant with her third child. Before you can say split pea soup, Jessica is displaying signs of full-blown demonic possession complete with projectile vomiting and fully-rotating head! Could it be that she s carrying the child of the Antichrist himself?Described as disgusting, scary trash and maddeningly inappropriate by film critic Roger Ebert and subject to a lawsuit by Warner Bros. (who claimed copyright infringement against a certain William Friedkin film), the devilish denizens at Arrow Video have summoned up this wickedly entertaining popcorn spiller fit for Satan himself!SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS2K restoration of the Uncut English Export Version, released as The Devil Within Her (108 mins)High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentationOriginal uncompressed mono audioOptional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingArchival audio commentary with director/producer Ovidio G. Absolute classic
This film is so awful that is actually brilliant . The acting sucks, the dubbing sucks, the story sucks, but add them together and you get 100 minutes of pure brilliance. You won't stop laughing. Highly recommended if you are feeling depressed or bored.

Beyond the exorcist
Most horror cinema fans know how popular the original Exorcist proved to be, with tales of people passing-out and screaming in the aisles, how I would love to have been there to either confirm or refute such claims, suffice to say the movie spawned a brief sub-genre all of its own and Beyond The Door is one of several knock-offs which would be rushed out to cash-in. Richard Johnson lends his commanding thespian voice skills to this Italian effort providing a narrative introduction as to the possibility that Mephistopheles could be waiting to invade your next waking moment. Beyond The Door's début director Ovidio G. Assonitis may be more familiar to horror fans for his later shocker Madhouse due to earning a place on the now legendary Video Nasty list of 1984. I'm not going to send anyone reading this to sleep with a plot synopsis, I almost never read them myself, but if you are reading this, chances are you're looking for some demonic possession fun, it may be worth mentioning that Rosemary's Baby gets thrown into this mix, but I'll leave that for you to discover in a film with an uneasy and somewhat disturbing rhythm all its own. Unlike the Exorcist which works by grounding the viewer in a prosaic sense of reality this film places the viewer straight into a surrealist mindset of unreality, left to fend for moments of normality on which to hold on to. If you enjoy the demonic possession sequences in The Exorcist you'll probably enjoy those visited upon star Juliet Mills who puts in a convincing performance backed up by the competent effects. This Code Red DVD release contains the full uncut edition of the film along with the following extras - Audio commentary with director a second audio commentary with star Juliet Mills an interview with Richard Johnson plus BEYOND THE DOOR, 35 years later feature.

Disappointing waste.
Like a cross between Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist but failing to match either of those films in greatness. The biggest horror in this movie is the music soundtrack (funk and disco) and its choppy editing. The make-up effects are very good, equaling The Exorcist's, but frankly they're wasted in this garbled mess of a film. The dvd I got does not have the extended international cut that the Code Red release has (released on 2-disc dvd & bluray later) nor the extra features the Arrow (bluray) release has, unfortunately. Would I recommend this film? No. Watch instead Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist instead for a far better viewing time.

Devil in the dubbing
Italian films of the period were keen on re-recording/dubbing everything in the studio, and apart from Mills and Johnson's voices all other voices are dubbed and sound amateur, particularly the husband's. The artificiality of the dubbed dialogue spoils what could've been a superb film. And the stuff that brat of a daughter comes out with...Fortunately, there is no audio noise reduction (NR). NR leaves audio dead and lifeless, and can ruin a film.

Not an Exorcist knockoff.
On the contrary. Past the concept of demonic possession the similarities ends. Instead of a young girl we have a 30-ish mom being possessed. Instead of an exorcism we get a man who wants evil to be born. Sure, there is a headturn and the puking of green goo, but we see that in other films too. Juliet Mills is terrific as the possessed woman and Richard Johnson (Zombie, 1979) is very good as evils acolyte.
