ASE Test Preparation - A2 Automatic Transmissions and Transaxles (ASE Test Preparation Series)

Worth buying but only for supplementary study
The author or authors behind the six practice tests in the book (Fifth Edition) will need to do more research. The actual ASE A2 exam that I took (and passed) contained in-depth questions about various electrical components (EPC, for example), lots of questions involving wiring diagrams, and apply charts. The questions involving the wiring diagrams presume you have a working knowledge of electrical. There is a lot of intersection between A2 and A6 (electrical). The practice exams in the Delmar are easy, questions are basic, and you don't get a lot of apply-chart questions and wiring questions. Questions in the Delmar have a lot of intersection of topics between A2 and easy A4 (suspension). There may be too many questions about throttle cable valves, governors or modulators, which are outdated after TPS's, VSS's, etc. There were not enough questions about component failures, restricted transmission filters, and the like.If I had only used the Delmar book as a study guide I would have failed. But that said I'm not an idiot which is why my study comprised older Delmar books (which are better but still outdated, of course) and lots of other sources available on the net anyway.Three stars but not lower than that because any practice exam is valuable to refer to when preparing for an exam, and this book has six.BTW: The actual ASE A2 exam is comprised of 60 questions, you are scored off a base of 50, and the passing score is 33/50, which is the lowest I've seen for an ASE exam. Most of them require at least a score of 70% to pass.I have used Delmar's books to pass other ASE exams such as A6 and A8, and those books have been quite useful. But this one for the A2, turned out to be something else. Expect the actual A2 exam to be a lot, LOT harder.

Didn't cover lots on test.
I took the test A2 in 2021 so keep that in mind. This book is great if you want to learn about automatic transmissions. Really tackles the issues of lockup and torque converter function very well. Lots of great material here for anybody who wants to be able to diagnose transmissions. That's the reason it got any stars. Now why it ranked so low. The book did not cover enough of what was on the test. The test asked much more about building transmissions and diagnosing the valve body than this book covered. The test has questions about setting up clutches, measuring components, and how to properly repair internal failures. I really suggest you supplement this knowledge with another test prep book and also do some research online on places like YT on how transmissions are actually built. I have years of experience in the automotive field specifically with transmissions and I still felt lost on the test. The A2 has been my hardest test so far. I also recommend you take your A6 first because every ASE test will have electrical questions. Good luck and hope you pass!

Not up to date at all December 2018
The basics of the review material with Delmar A2 is okay for the older ASE 2 tests but now with electric solenoids and the need to know electronic shift point pressures and other features that require scan tool interaction, this book is simply out of date with current standards. I also did well with the practice exams, however, several answer keys are incorrect but they're simply typos upon reviewing answers with the explanations. I do feel that the authors could have done their due diligence rather than regurgitate the same old. I do feel a bit cheated.

This book is TRASH
I read the book 3 times studied it for weeks and none of the material was on the ase test failed horribly by trusting this trash plus the book is filled with errors. Literally none of this material you read is on the test and Im not talking the answer practice questions, the actual material is trash. REFUND REFUND

A lot of errors in this book
I used this book to study for my A2 exam however the editing for all of these delmar books are bad but this one is the worst I've seen. Practice test 3, the answer key doesn't even match the explanations. Out of the 50 questions in the practice test 18 of the questions had a different explanation than the answer key. It's not like they were just shifted down 1 answer either. They just didn't match at all.

Not Up To Date
I used this book to prepare for my Automatic Transmission ASE. Unfortunately the tests in it are out of date. I did very well on the practice tests in this study guide but was suprised when I took the test. This book has questions that are out of date and irrelevant to the actual test I took.I do not recommend this Auto Transmissions book from the series. I also used the Brakes book and the Electrical book from this company and they were very helpful in getting ready for the respective tests which I passed with no problem.Find a different book to prepare for the Auto Transmission ASE, this one does not cut it.BTW - I did pass the A2 Transmission test but did not do as well and the test had many questions that this book did not address.

Terrible editing in this book
The answer key section for chapter 3 has 16 typos. When I was checking my answers from the answer key to the explanations section for test 3, 16 of the answers didn’t match up to what the answer key said the answer was

Great study guide!
Paired with a community college-level education, this is a valuable tool in passing the ASE A2 test.
