Recommended by my therapist
Recommended by my therapist, this book is a little on the wordy side, but definitely good material (and not only for the GLBT community)

A difficult read
I found this book to be obtuse and difficult to read. I'm glad others got more out of it. There are probably better ones out there.

I'm not finished yet but liking it so far....
This book might be harder to read if you don't have any college experience. It is written and reads just like a college text book but with some anecdotal stories. I would recommend it if you have experience reading books written by doctors, researchers, or college professors. Might be a little wordy for others....

PASS THIS ONE BY; SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY
too technical and complicated; describes the problem very well but very little practical advice on how to resolve or remove this very painful emotion. wouldnt recommend this book for someone seeking self help; wasted dollars as far as I am concerned and a waste of time to read thru it; I dont like the cover photo, doesnt relate at all to subject matter ; I cant say I hate it because the author did a good job of describing the problem but again little amount of pages devoted to solution; It was more enjoyable reading then John Bradshaw's seminal work, Healing the Shame that Binds You.

What if everything that you thought you knew about about shame was wrong ?
I had a difficult time when a friend first handed me this book, asking for my opinion of it; despite regularly reading far more complex material, and despite having been "out" since the mid 80's.Once I managed to push past my own internal resistance to the material, I realized why it was that I initially found it difficult. This book profoundly changed my life an altered my perceptions of my own emotions, as well as the emotions of people around me.So many little confounding things that I never quite "got" that happened to me in the past I finally understood. The authors do a remarkable job at showing how functional Tomkins Affect and Script Theory is, how to apply it to your everyday life, and how to learn and grow from your new awareness. Amazing job, I can not thank them enough.I was so impacted by this work that I actually started reading Tomkins very complex Affect Imagery and Consciousness.Though this book focuses on gay and lesbian people, it's far from restricted to them; literally anyone can get a great deal of insight from this book. Pick it up and give it a shot, you will not be sorry. It can change your life.

Excellent! A Must-read.
The authors provide an excellent critique and analysis of many of the problems impacting gays and lesbians. They also provide a number of suggestions which LGBT people can practice to improve their self-esteem and confidence -- these points are practical and indeed useful.

Cis centric language, of its time in that way ...
Cis centric language, of its time in that way. The largest solution the book proposes is to have a long term monogamous partner and to go to pride parades.
