Some very cool tricks.
I bought this book for my Boy Scout library in the hopes that some of my less experienced adults would read it during summer camp. I've been camping for a long time and didn't think there'd be much new for me. I have to admit that Jacobson humbled me. I ended up taking a full page of notes as I read through this book, learning new tricks. Most were slap-to-the-forehead kinds of insights such as using gun-blue to rust-proof your axe heads. It seems so obvious now that I still wonder why I never thought of that myself.Okay, there was also a lot that I did already know. And some stuff that will not likely apply since I don't do much Canadian canoeing. And a few tips (like the way he rigs tarp lines for high winds) that I'm still trying to figure out. But the book was still a valuable read.

Great book for beginning campers
Great book for beginning campers. There was not a whole lot of new information in it for me but I still had a hard time putting it down when the book arrived. I enjoyed Cliff's personal stories sprinkled in to illustrate real world instances for his tips. No offense to Cliff but the info contained is almost a historical record of camping practices and equipment (I still remember the large canvas tents). That being said it has been revised and updated recently. I'll be bringing it with me on my next trip this spring.

Worth the cost
I thought I knew everything I would ever need to know about camping, but bought this book on sale as a gift. Skimming through it, I found at least 3 useful tricks that I didn't know. Worth the cost of the book already.Much of the book seems to be based on canoe camping, but many of the skills are useful in any camping situation.

First time campers and experienced campers will find many useful tips here.
Camping is enjoyable if you can maintain your basic comforts with a minimum of effort. You will find this book useful when you are planning a camping trip. It is set up like a reference book. I have made use of many of the secrets found in this book, especially topics related to cooking.

Surprising technical items
The chapters are listed in alphabetical order by topic. So it reads like a table of contents, making it easy to research camping questions and answers. There are some amazing details about winter camping that I am going to try out.

Top Secrets discloses good information
I enjoyed some of the suggestions that this book points out. I thought that idea about overcoming a leaking tent floor was great. It was cheap, practical and could be used for almost any sized tent.

A wealth of knowledge
An interesting and informative book, very comprehensive, written with rather breathless, old-fashioned enthusiasm. I particularly like the equal time given to Canada and the US, and the alphabetical sequence of the topics. There's a lot of solid camping nerd information here, especially intended for a very handy person who enjoys saving money at the expense of effort, and favours traditionalism over minimalism.
