Uplifting and Inspirational
This book is an easy read that provides insights into modern day living in the US alongside easily digestible insights into its history along route. A personal tale of adventure that inspires going out of our way to find the human stories of people through chance meetings with the everyday and extraordinary. Where’s next James Anthony … London to Cape Town?

Enjoyable book, especially when you've found the accompanying maps!
I enjoyed this book and have signed up to be informed when the author publishes the next two in the "Slow Road" series. I wish I had discovered all the maps and photographs before I read it, though, as this would have enhanced the experience. James looks like a nice guy and was obviously able to get on well with most of the people with whom he struck up a casual conversation en route.

A bit of a slog
Reads like a diary. I don`t necessarily expect every book I read to be a barrel of laughs but I did find it a little pedestrian. The author was at the time of writing still clearly processing recent stressful events which he refers to throughout the book, which seems to me to have been a device to close a chapter on his life. It`s OK, but won`t get a second read

A travel gem and a pleasantly surprising page turner.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and flew through it.There has been a travel writing void since Bryson hung up his boots.James Anthony entertains with his own humorous travelogue.Nicely Recommended

First class
I love travel books, especially road trips in the US. This is one of the best I have read. I would thoroughly recommend.

Too much at the bar
Little reference to the people he met, except those in bars. And a poorly thought through route if he had really wanted to see America as she is!

a slow road to dead horse
Slow in some places, especially Florida , but the whole journey holds your attention. A book about a man definitely interested in people wanting to get to know an America most of us Americans don’t know! My husband and I have done some traveling and spent 15 days in a motorhome around Alaska so Tok, Artic circle we knew. And the pipeline. It’s a good read with a different view of the land and the people

A wonderful read
If you're a fan of a good travel story, the human element, and getting to know folks on a deeper level than you ordinarily might - plus a smattering of history, this is the book for you.The premise is pretty straightforward: The author is a British guy who's been living in the US for a while, has a bit of a life-changing event, and takes the opportunity to hit the road and see the place he's lived in (and the person he's lived as) before he moves back to the UK. But not just any old road - the side roads that wend their way from the very bottom to the very top of North America. Driving his trusty little Ford, he acts with the intention to get to know the people that live and work, and the places, along the way. It's a terrific read and I'd encourage you to give it a go.

Excellent travel book from a Brit exploring the USA
What a fun read this was! Seeing the USA from the perspective of a Brith, traveling via car from the Florida Keys to Deadhorse, Alaska is an adventure you must go on. He is funny and descriptive all in a good natured way. Having spent many summers in Alabama with grandparents, he was spot on!If you cannot actually go on a summer road trip this is the next best thing!

Just an opinion
Interesting and well-written but Mr Anthony, while self-congratulating about Englands (rightfully) outlawing slavery, neglects to add that after doing so, England turned her attention to eliminating the Irish.

Fun ride across America with an entertaining Brit!
Couldn’t put this one down! An exciting trip across America with lots of entertainment on the way! Written through the eyes of a Brit which made it that much more enjoyable. I have recommended this book to many friends! Does not disappoint! Wish I had the time to visit some of the wonderful places described here!
