five stars for the COURAGE of LOU GRAMM alone!!!
Okay...I felt obliged to set the record straight for all the well intentioned "haters" ripping into this DVD on Amazon.com. Sure its not the production level of the recent widescreen hi def Sound stage Soundstage: Foreigner - Live and many who purchased the wonderful DVD from the early 90's Foreigner: Live at Deer Creek will wonder who the lead singer is...as he sort of sounds like Lou Gramm and sort of looks like a bigger slower and slightly wounded Lou Gramm. As another reviewer noted...after a reunion in the mid 90's that saw Foreigner successfully regain their audience and make a well received album "Mr Moonlight"...Lou Gramm was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Let me say it again...Lou Gramm had a life threatening Brain Tumor. The horrific operation which entailed opening up a huge chunk of his skull and removing a golf ball sized tumor was traumatic to say the least. This operation left Lou alive, thankfully, but with pituitary problems which gave him tremendous weight gain as well as other motor skill challenges. This derailed Foreigner's resurgance and reunion and the group was back "on hold" rather than go the route of a replacement. With the 25th anniversary of the group Lou rejoined Mick Jones and they set out to again try and reclaim their legacy (somewhere between 50 and 70 million ALBUMS sold)...however at this point the once mighty stadium rockers were reduced to club sized venues and a tour bus. I saw this tour and after getting over the shock of seeing a bloated Lou Gramm fronting the band (at the time I had no knowledge of his troubles) The show went into overdrive and for 2 hours I can't remember one slow moment..it was an all time favorite show! This DVD is truly a memento rather than an amazing visual treat...its an awesome behind the scenes documentary of life on the road and to my way of thinking a tribute to a courageous performer Lou Gramm. If you have ever performed for an audience (I have) ....even at the peak of your powers it can be a scary thing but to know you may have physical and mental challenges and to know you are not close to your peak and yet still get out there and leave it all on the stage for 2 hours a night....I stand in awe and respect of Mr Gramm. If you want a DVD of classic foreigner get the Live at Deer Creek, Obviously Lou is no longer the lead singer and I believe he is happy with that and Mick Jones deserves to proceed with his band and Kelly Hanson is terrific..there is room in the world for two singers (see AC/DC for example). This is a very good sounding DVD with video that looks like it was taken by roadies along for the tour with a couple of half decent cameras.I hope knowing the back story some of the hate and ridicule can be tempered with some respect and empathy.
