See it with your spouse
Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard play Max Vatan and Marianne Beausejour, WWII spies for the Allies who fall in love during an operation and get married. Then their marriage and their lives are threatened by a suspicion that Marianne is a German spy. No, there are no spoilers here, all this is in the trailer. I don't like trailers that give away all the good stuff that happens in the movie. In this case, the information in the trailer actually drew me in. The fact that I knew there would be a plot development where Marian is suspected as a German spy didn't ruin it. Because I cared about Max and Marian at the point that it happened, and I wanted them to live happily ever after, I was just as involved as they were in trying to resolve this problem.Allied is directed by Robert Zemeckis. Really? The "Back to the Future" guy? The "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" guy? I am going to have to take another look at his filmography. This film is completely different in tone and plot and look from those earlier, sillier efforts. There are some great action sequences, but I was most impressed with the quiet moments: Max and Marianne making love in a car in the desert during a sandstorm, Marianne waiting in the car for an overdue Max to return, Marianne laying her hands on a piano. The draw in these sequences is conjured in my imagination, and doesn't appear on the screen.Allied is wonderful to look at. The cinematography, the costumes, the cars, the storefronts in the background, all look terrific. And the two leads are dressed to kill. Brad Pitt is supremely handsome in his expensive suits and Brylcreem hair.I have never thought Brad Pitt was a good actor, and he does not impress here. However, his very good looking, manicured, stoic performance is just right for a Canadian spy during war time. I imagine that really good spies don't talk a lot, maintaining the many lies of a spy's life is easier if you talk less.I bought the ending. Even though it was sad, the characters managed to wring some happiness out of life after all. Highly recommended for couples viewing. Not for families, it is rated R, and there is enough sex and violence to justfiy that rating. Besides, the best part of movie is the relationship between Max and Marianne. Kids won't appreciate how difficult the choices are that Max and Marianne are faced with. Only adults who have lived and had to make hard choices will appreciate what these characters do under the circumstances they are placed in.

BEAUTIFUL WWII ROMANCE FULL OF SPIES AND INTRIGUE
Two spies find love in Casablanca, Morocco in 1942. Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) and mysterious and beautiful Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard) unite to assassinate the German ambassador in Morocco. Their "fake" marriage inspires love and romance.Pitt and Coltillard have a strong chemistry in ALLIED. Both have never looked better. Pitt as the quiet man knowing that wartime romances between spies have no future. ALLIED is a beautifully filmed period piece that takes back to wartime Morocco and England. One amazing scene has Max and Marianne finally giving into their passions in a car during a desert sandstorm. It's filmed in an amazing way.Max and Marianne settle into domestic bliss in London as Max works in the war offices. Real heart wrenching drama begins when Max is told Marianne is suspected of being a spy (a spy for the Germans). In the world of spy romances, the betrayed lover is required to kill his guilty partner. Max has hours to prove she is innocent and the agonizing journey begins.ALLIED is certain a pleasant film and better than I expected. The chemistry between our stars adds to the excitement as we hope their love is real and will survive the war. It's a beautiful film to look at with the authentic period clothes and setting. The last act is full of suspense and mystery and Marianne's story unravels. Pitt and Cotillard light up the screen.

An excellent hidden gem
I didn't even know about this movie until I was told about it years after it came out. One of Zemeckis' best movies ever, especially since it doesn't have the distraction of a Zemeckis tech gimmick to distract the entire filmmaking process. Just a good story told well

Waste of money, wait till it comes on tv
Hmm. Well after taking care of my husband the past days who has the flu, I decided to treat myself and rent this movie. We are on a budget so it hurt a little to spend $5.00 but I do like a good movie so I went for it. The plot was interesting and I enjoyed how they were kept on their toes and the attention to detail that their lifestyle required. However, I have never seen Brad Pitt act like this. He can only be described as wooden, emotionless. It pretty much ruined the movie for me. Also, I have to comment on the 2 openly lesbian characters that live together. I'm having a very hard time believing that in early 1940's Britain that this would have ever happened. Obviously this was just another way to make this lifestyle mainstream. It shouldn't be in a period drama.
