I have tried to research the origins of the stems and branches system but this book lays out information like I haven't seen, very clear illustrations of the star patterns responsible for the oracle scripts. Goes into great detail about the wu xing, the 4 palaces of the sky, the related body parts, even the lunar mansions. I absolutely adore this book. The meditation stances for each stem is also beautiful.

If you study the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, for your own cultivation or for application in Chinese medicine, you will find these cards invaluable. Very high quality production and Master Wu's calligraphy is beautiful. Also very helpful are the cards in this set that show the the stroke order of the Chinese characters, so you can practice your own calligraphy and get the feel for the energy of each Stem and Branch.
