folded:4.25 inches; open: 7.75 inches. the width is approx. 1 inch.

how long in inches is the comb when open and when closed?

A little over 4" closed.A little over 7.5" open.Amazing comb! I ordered this and some comb I believe from South Africa, this one is much bigger, and feels better.They do say the combs are hand made wood, but I think they are plastic, so not too sure about "hand made."

why does the features section say batteries required???

Well if you want batteries, they’re obviously not provided! That being said it’s more than obvious to say batteries are not needed for this item. If you wish to place them next to this product that’s your prerogative.
