How are the attached to the roof. Do they need to be screwed into battens or onto the tiles?

You just screw them onto the batten. I used screws so if you need to replace them in the future it will be easier make sure you lock them in to each other before screwing them on . If you get stuck there are a couple of YouTube videos to watch.
