Used and not working
When I received it, the box had obviously already been opened, moreover there was a greasy fingerprint on the device itself… fine. But then it wouldn’t even turn on. So I paid full price for a used item that doesn’t work… returned it obviously

The sound is as good as it gets for Bluetooth. I use it with my two tablets; it allows you to connect with any two bt devices. Now I can use all of my wired headphones plugged into the btr5 and can walk around the main floor of my house without having to carry the tablet around. It has pretty good reception; distances of 30 feet with no hiccups or dropouts on my main floor. If I I go up the stairs to the bathroom or bedroom there are trouble spots where the reception starts to hiccup and drop out; but I can live with that. The fiio btr5 can also be used as a non Bluetooth amp/dac by connecting to my tablets with the supplied usb cables. Fiio provides two cables, one usbc to usbc and one usbA to usbc. It also sounds good that way. Although the sound with wireless Bluetooth is just about as good, almost the same. I also really appreciate the volume control rocker and the oled written screen readout, better than led lights that you have to remember which colors or how many blinks mean what. I should also mention the btr5 has enough power even in low gain with single ended connection to drive my 300ohm Senn. hd6xx. But it also has manually switchable high gain if you need even more volume. And the btr5 also has balanced connections. So no matter if you use singled or balanced or low gain or high gain, you have enough options to drive most headphones. The fiio btr5 for my uses definitely rates 5 stars.

I got this because I wanted to use my great Beyerdynamics DT770 Pro 80 ohms -initially purchased to practice bass guitar quietly- with my music on my Macbook Air and iPhone. Worked on the Air before but at low volume with poor dynamics and bass, didn't work on my iPhone at all as no jack output. The BTR5 does exactly what it should: I now get the full taste of these earphones. Volume is nearly twice as loud as before on the Macbook Air - no driver needed-. Music is more composed also, with more dynamics across the board, fuller and deeper basses, cleaner trebles, and ways better mids, all very well mixed, the DAC works like a charm for its price in USB mode. The software to control the BTR5 is great. The sound is overall neutral but can be colored using the equalizer, which does however slightly reduce the output level when used. Bluetooth also works at good volume from my iPhone with a lovely, composed overall mix, but there is no magic, USB connection is always going to sound way better, with any device. But it's nice to be able to walk around in the house listening to music while my phone is charging. One magic the BTR5 also can't do is change one's poor MP3 recording to hifi, on the contrary, they will sound poorer compared to one's good recordings that truly benefit from the DAC. It's really worth it if you have access to good quality digital music such as Tidal or Qobuz, with poor recording you'll just get a louder volume. Certain genres like Dancehall and Reggae sadly often suffer from poor recording and production, even Tidal and Qobuz can't change that. But the DAC works like a charm with every genre (tested hip-hop, reggae, rock, jazz, classic) as long as the recording and production are decent enough. Last, one needs good quality enough earphones to pair them with the BTR5, as it won't change a 20 euro IEM to gold. But properly paired, it really makes that gold shine! So overall great little device, well built, for home use via USB on my Macbook, and bluetooth on the go. Brings tons of improvement to sound. The clip and protective case are great in both design and use. Paired to my Beyerdynamics, for 200 euros I get a gear that sounds better than any sub-500 euros Bluetooth earphones. Very much worth it!
