S Q L: The Ultimate Guide From Beginner To Expert - Learn And Master SQL In No Time! Review: easy understand, practical code samples - Obviously, you are not going to master SQL in no time, but it will help you fast enough to learn as a beginner. Each chapter has well written, easy understand, practical code samples. This book is more a reference book style in my opinion, so it is an excellent reference for quick and easy queries to keep on your desk. Warning: this is not an all-in-one SQL bible, e.g. if you want to fine tune your SQL server to gain performance, this is not the book for you. Review: Consider investing in a standard work on SQL instead - Although the e-book is inexpensive, it is severely lacking: * There is little actual, usable content, and most of the useful bits are quotes from other sources. * The book gets its length from overblown and sadly rather useless examples (through pages and pages of sample tables, for example). * The formatting is poor, making it hard to track what the key commands and parameters are. * The writing style is overly casual, glossing over details and making curious use of disclaimers. If the author would remove unnecessary detail (as through shortening sample query output), improve formatting, and overall trim the book using more of a focused, unapologetic style, it would not necessarily become a good book on SQL, but certainly a much better one, actually warranting the though low price. (It is astonishing to see so literally a hundred glowing reviews and not single critical remark. As if there had been two versions of this book.)

Great as a refresher for a quick review
As a researcher and an author I read many books about a specific topic. This one caught my attention during a price promotion and it was well worth the price I paid for it. If you are looking for a well written summary of SQL this book may help you. I would not recommend it if you are new to SQL unless your intention is just to have a secondary description of what SQL is all about. As you know, learning is not a linear process - one needs to read different articles about the same subject and do lots of practicing exercises to internalize concepts. For the right price this book is a gem.

All of the negative comments are correct.
Okay, I have had this book for over four years, I originally purchased it just to brush up on SQL. I have been working with SQL on and off for about 20 years now and wasn't really interested in a beginner's guide, just a reference. With that said, if I wanted a beginner's guide/book, this would not have been it. After four years of owning it, I finally decided to read it. The first thing I normally do with a SQL book is look to see what database(s) the book is using. You are never really told this in this book. There are spots throughout the book that it will let you know what database the code is using, and that would be one of Microsoft's test databases (Adventureworks20**). So I definitely agree that this book is put together like it was notes from the author's random SQL notes. There is no reason to use Adventureworks2008 for one problem and then Adventureworks2012, and use them interchangeably and then many problems without letting the user know what database they were using. It just blows my mind that someone would just through their notes in to a book and then aim it at beginners or anyone for that matter.

Always wanted to learn SQL and now I got it! Cool charts throughout the book! Thanks!
Wow…learning SQL for the first time! Nobody said it would be easy but this is a cool book. The part that I like most is that is is very detailed and breaks everything down for you in very simple terms. The charts throughout this book makes it a winner for sure. It makes the most complex language more easy to follow. I know that I will have to read this book a few more times to start to master the art of SQL but for this price it beats going back to school to learn it! Awesome book! Thanks! :)

Don't buy this book! Content is not usable
Don't buy this book! Content is not usable. The book is a series of useless examples and reads like a copy-paste from other sources, particularly Microsoft webpage (Microsoft Developer Network). It is so random, it even includes a chapter of Recommendations of thinks to buy in Amazon, such as a stress ball, legal pads and an L-shaped desk! Don't spend your money on this book! If you really want to learn SQL buy other books such as Mastering Oracle SQL, 2nd Edition by Sanjay Mishra.

Not for beginners
I don't have any real programming experience and thought this book would be a great introduction. My goal was not to be a programmer but to be able to follow along some sql code from real programmers at work. After forcing myself through most of the book I don't feel like I know much more than before I started. I've read some other "intro" books that were much easier to follow along and provided better examples.

For anyone who deals with programming should have good knowledge of SQL
This book is exactly what i needed. I'm starting out on learning SQL and this book provides great beginners guide to mastering SQL. It was written in a noobie friendly way, using simple words that are easy to comprehend. Information is organised and presented very clearly and I honestly enjoy the learning process. For someone who doesn't know anything about SQL like me, I find this book extremely useful as a great stepping stone in this SQL learning journey.

Je n'ai pas aimé le format. Je ne l'ai pas lu.

This book doesn't go into building SQL statemets at all, appears to just copy and paste tables from Stack exchange and Microsoft and contains a chapter on buying products from amazon! I kid you not. Save your money

The book comes with a few querys as example and a poor explanation to it. It appears unstructured. The author may is a pro in sql but for sure forgot completly what it means to be a beginner. Well at least it was cheap.
