Little Mommy (Little Golden Book)

Little Classic (not woke)
Good grief - everyone calm down. Reviewers saying this book left them damaged - sweet mercy! Give me a break. This is a sweet OLDER book - and it's called Little MOMMY. MOMMY. If you want Little Welder or Little Stock Trader, go search that title. The book is sweet and loving and shows the many ways a mom can care for others (something I wish my own mom had done).

sweet, wholesome book
My 21 month old daughter brings this book to me constantly to read it to her, and it has fast become her very favorite book. The pictures are just beautiful, and I love the story. The little girl has obviously been trained well at the hand of a loving mommy, and the little girl is a wonderful "little mommy" herself.I would like to comment on some of the anti-little mommy reviews that I read on here. It seems that the main arguments are that this book teaches that women can only be home raising their children and that it shows mothers basically slaving and exhausting themselves when they are home. Um, yes, staying home and raising your children requires much work, and at times is exhausting, and I'm not going into the moral ramifications of allowing daycare workers, nannies, and preschool teachers to shape the morals of our children, rather than being home and shaping them ourselves, in this review. However, this book is a great depiction of what it is to truly mother your children. The girl HAPPILY takes up the work. She's not dreading each diaper change, dreading the housework, or the cooking, and when she goes to bed at night, though exhausted, she is smiling at her babies, and quite content with her lot. She takes her babies by her side as she works (obviously she learned this at her own mother's knee), and I personally love this depiction of a mommy's role. The book is called Little Mommy. It's not called Little Doctor, Little Lawyer, or Little CEO, and the book rightly depicts a Little Mommy. If you want a book showing little girls pretending to be doctors, lawyers, or CEO's, buy them. But to say that this book is limiting your daughter by showing her that girls can only do one thing is ridiculous. If you bought a book called "Little Lawyer," I doubt you'd be reviewing the book negatively because it shows that women can only be lawyers.Would you prefer the book to show the mother waking up frazzled in the morning, complaining about her husband, chasing the children out of the house because it's time for daycare, feeding them poptarts in the car because the mother has no time to cook for her familiy, talking on her cell phone while her children watch a DVD in the backseat on the way to day care, then leaving her children at daycare crying, screaming, and pitching a fit because they'd rather be with their mommy than left with a bunch of strangers? That's what the Little Mommies of today are learning that mothering is, but I doubt that a book depicting motherhood as it truly is today would be palatable to the mothers complaining about this book either. If you want a book that shows a loving mother HAPPILY taking care of her children, her home, and her husband, this book would be a lovely choice for your family. If you want a depiction of what your daughters are learning it means to be a modern little mommy, this book is not for you. If you want to give your daughter options as to different occupations, buy this book along with books that emphasize other occupations.

Wonderful, sweet book!
Wonderful book that my 3 year old daughter asks us to read over and over! We read this so many times on a recent car trip that everyone in the car could practically recite it by memory! My daughter likes playing house and being a mommy and this book is just perfect for her. It warms my heart when I see her sitting in her rocking chair with her dolly "reading" dolly this book. Yes, it is a boy that plays daddy and it's daddy that goes to the office. And yes, it is a boy that plays the doctor. But guess what? In my family, Me the Mommy IS staying home with her babies, hanging laundry outside and having tea parties and Daddy IS going to the office in his new car! Sooo... fits right in with my daughter's "world". I'm sure I'll have plenty of opportunities to tell her stories about how mommy used to go to the law office everyday. My daughter's education about gender roles did not start with this book and will not end with this book. Please just enjoy it for what it is -- children playing house and learning to take care of others!

Classic
I love this book and so does my 5yo LIttle Mommy. When I read the reviews on this prior to purchase I had to laugh. So many comments about the "horrors" of how old fashioned it was with outdated gender roles etc. So so critical yet this is nearly exactly how our household is run and there's nothing wrong with it. Daddy works very hard so that Mama can (mostly) stay at home to cook, clean, homeschool, raise animals and babies. We love it and it is perfect for us. There's nothing sexist about this and this is how we dreamed of raising our family. Little Mommy makes my daughter excited to be a caring mama and she mimics the book with her baby doll. We talk about how girls can be doctors too or the "breadwinners" of the family and how boys can be stay-at-home daddies. There's lots of options, this is just one story of how it can be. I definitely "dare to read it to my daughter" and hope she realizes the beautiful life she has been raised in. She has milked cows, plucked chickens, assisted in animal births and deaths, is smarter than most kids her age and more polite, and thinks strong smart kickass women (like WonderWoman) are amazing as she dreams of trailrunning 14ers like her mama. Yes...Little Mommy is perfectly fine for her to read and pretend as she likes.
