Q: Could you use for chicks

I have used one for many years to keep chicks warm. Use a 75 or 100 watt bulb, if rated for 100 watts, and keep the lamp down low. As the chicks grow, raise the lamp and reduce the wattage. Be sure to use an incandescent bulb because LED bulbs do not emit enough heat to warm the chicks. Do not use a heat lamp bulb unless you use a fireproof (metal) brooder and have the light about 3 feet away, according to the lamp's guidelines. Also you must have a ceramic socket, not a plastic one. I do not use a heat lamp bulb on any chicks, but then I live in the South where it is beginning to get warm in March/April. If you live in the cold North, then I can't give you an answer.

Q: how wide will the clamp open?

The clamp opens 3" if you are fairly strong. I think it holds best at 1 1/2" or less perfectly

Q: Can the reflector be removed?

Yes there is a wing nut to loosen the clamp and then reflector can be unscrew and removed

Great!

I needed a simple and portable light, for my photography adventures. This was a great buy.It takes regular light bulbs. I can change It from a potlight, to regular bulb for different effects.The clamp is great, it's quite sturdy and hangs onto anything quite well.The cord is a bit short, but nothing a simple extension cord can't fix.It fits into my backpack easily.Would buy again for sure.

Perfect for use I purchased them. High five from my horses.

Great for purchased use. I bought to use in grooming stall at horse shows. Used household 100 watt LED daylight bulbs which provided good light but 4 would have been ideal due to shadow in a back corner of the stall. Easy to assemble and disassemble for easy storage however screw together joint could easily strip. Clamp mechanism keeps it secure.
